Driving from Sierpe to Drake Bay

Hi we're planing to visit CR next week and since we're spending only a week there we've been running into scheduling conflicts with the transportation means all the time. On the 28th we plan to leave La Foruna and head South to Corcovado. Since there a few hrs of driving we thought we might stop and spend the early afternoon in Dominical to rest before we continue to Drake. Anyhow we cannot make it for the collective boat that leaves at 3:30pm from Sierpe. It seems that we have two options driving to Drake or paying $200 per person for a private ride. We dropped off he second option. I'd appreciate your suggestions. Is the road to Drake something that we should avoid?

You do realize that it is 6 h non-stop driving from La Fortuna to Dominical?! And that is 4 h non-stop driving from Dominical to Drake Bay?! Or better if you will start at the sunrise (6 am) you just might reach Drake Bay at sunset (6 pm) if all goes well and stopping only for taking fuel and having a brief pit stop. In short, just not doable. If you will reach Dominical before dark I can guarantee you that you will be looking only for a place to rest your body and your mind. Therefore find a place there and continue to Drake Bay early next morning.

Why don't you skip the La Fortuna section and just head south from San Jose? You can make Domical on the first day, take in your surroundings and enjoy the beach in the morning. From there to Sierpe is probably a 1.5 to 3 hour trip, depending on how much rubber necking you want to do. Sierpe has its own points of interest beyond the water taxi depot. It is in the heart of the mangroves and has an incredible variety of birds and other wildlife. It is worth at least a one night stay. The one car ferry from there can be beckoned at any time during the day and costs about $6. The drive across the OSA Peninsula highlands to Rincon will take at least 2.5 hours. Leaving Sierpe after 2 PM is pushing the safety margin because most of this trek is on windy, narrow dirt roads on which livestock, people and unlit vehicles sometimes also travel.

Highway travel on the coastal road and Highway 245 averages 60 to 80 kph. Travel on the Pan American highway south of San Jose is 40 to 70 kph and you can really get slowed down on 20 km hills by the lack of passing lanes and very slow, heavily loaded (wide) trucks and buses. Travel in the 15 kms around San Jose is extremely slow and confusing, especially in "rush hour". Travel on dirt roads such as the Sierpe - Rincon and Drake Bay roads averages 20 to 30 kph. You can push the margins and go faster in all these places, but before you do, I suggest you look at what the locals are doing and try to understand their pace and allow that you are in their land.

If seeing the volcano (currently inactive), developed hot pools/spas and other tourist activities in La Fortuna is mandatory, you may want to consider busing it there & back and flying by Nature Air*** to Drake Bay. This would allow you to focus on relaxing, not negotiating roads and learning things you probably don't want or need to know. Their current schedule would allow this: www.natureair.com/drake-bay-flights.aspx and the total cost would probably be about the same as renting, insuring and fueling a vehicle for a week. There is a small, basic lodge at the seaward end of the runway run by a young German/Swiss couple. I am sure they can arrange to get you where you need to be in Drake Bay by Toyota Land Cruiser, horse or boat. Write me if you need their contact information.

***Nature Air flies out of a different San Jose airport than you arrive at. See:
