County Longford also features under the general heading of The Lakelands and Midland areas of Ireland:

Don't forget to visit the small village of Abbeyshrule in the south of the county; it was the overall winner of Ireland's Tidy Town competition in 2012:

We visited Abbeyshrule a couple of weeks ago, it is a pretty little village with its ancient monastery and one pub - the Rustic Inn. Also nearby is the village of Ardagh with its heritage centre, well worth visiting.

Otler places within easy reach of Longford are Strokestown House & famine museum. The ruins of Fore Abbey are also well worth a visit.

I second Strokestown House and famine museum, I visited last year when I stayed in County Roscommon and it was really interesting to see how they used to live and about the horrors of the famine.
