Its a long journey by public transport.

Bus from Mijas to Malaga - or to Fuengirola then train to Malaga.

Then bus Malaga to Nerja. See www.alsa.es for timetable.

Alternatively take an organised coach excursion from the coast - approx cost €26 each.

You will first have to get transport from Mijas to Malaga (others will tell you whether it is best by bus or train). Then a bus from Malaga to Nerja.

a return is no cheaper than 2 singles.

You need to allow at least 2 hours each way in travel. Check the sticky at the top of the forum with all the local transport info.

Get the bus into Fuengirola, from there the train into Málaga (get off at Maria Zambrano, second to last stop) and walk through the shopping centre to the bus station (it's clearly signposted). Buses to Nerja from there.

To be honest I think two hours is being pretty hopeful!

From Mijas on public transport? Two hours is more than pretty hopeful!

I would opt for the organised trip - or an overnight stay perhaps.

The journey from Malaga to Nerja alone takes 1 to 1.5 hours depending on the route. I would go on an organised coach excursion if you only have one day to visit.

If you have a look at the organised day-trips they tend to be around €20 for Nerja caves, Frigiliana and Nerja Town - not bad at all when you add up the cost of DIY. That includes entry into the caves, an hour or so in Frigiliana and a couple of hours in Nerja itself - plenty of time.

There are direct buses from Fuengirola up to Ronda if you're looking for an interesting day out by public transport.

Not sure about this but worth a thought I think

Consider an MPV/People carrier Taxi type thing. Split between 6 would cost similar to tours/excursions etc and give you more flexibility with time .

Maybe costs a few Euros more but relaxing for all ?

You could get the local Mijas bus (112) to the Renfe station in Malaga, this alone will take 80 minutes, walk through to the bus station and get the local bus to Nerja (60 minutes to 90 minutes)

Malaga is well worth a days visit on its own, from the Renfe station you can visit Granada, Cordoba, Antequera, Ronda etc, all these places offering far more to see in a days visit then Nerja has to offer.
