Travel north of Quebec City

We will be traveling to Quebec City for a few days in July 2009, and then want to drive north and find a place to stay for several days. Hoping to find an area where we can go whale watching, hiking, etc. We're looking at Baie-St-Paul as a possible place to stay, and are wondering what outdoor activities are available in that area in the summer. Does anybody have any suggestions? Thanks.

Hi GailCA,

Baie St-Paul is certainly a nice place to base yourselves, but I'm not so sure about whale watching from there. As for hiking, it may depend on your level, but here are a few options: Sentier des Caps (everything from day hikes to a three-day hike for the complete trail). Baie St-Paul is also relatively close to Parc des Grands Jardins where there are many hiking options, a popular one with a nice view is the Lac des Cygnes (and an added loop that is less travelled). You are also within a drive to Parc National des Hautes-Gorges de la Riviere Malbaie where THE hike is L'Acrople des Draveurs (may be busy, particularly on weekends).

There is a lot more hiking along the Saguenay River with plenty of access points (Riviere Eternite, Anse-St-Jean, Petit-Saguenay) to the trails. You may want to look into St-Simeon as a stopping point as you can access both the Saguenay and the road to Tadoussac (whales) from here.

Back in the Charlevoix there are also some smaller trails at Baie-des-Rochers (nice walk out to the water) and Les Eboulements (a suprisingly longer walk down to the water).

Enjoy your trip.

JQ,

Thank you so much for your suggestions and insight into the area--especially the tips on hiking. We will look into the parks and also St. Simeon.

Here is a link with photos of some of the places JQReports has mentioned in the Charlevoix region.

There are many photos of the Parc des Grands-Jardins and l'Isle-aux-Coudres (an island that's facing Baie-St-Paul):
