I have friends that just came from Colombia in a private car (via Bucaramanga, Medellin, Cali) and through Cucutá and San Cristobal to Merida. They encountered some landslides between Bucaramanga and Pamplona and there has been some problems between Puerto la Cruz and Caracas due to heavy rains. The Caracas-Oriente road should be solved really soon as this is a MAJOR artery here in Venezuela. We have often encountered landslides on the road from Barinas to Merida, even in normal weather.

But if you are going to Cartagena the route to take is the northern route through Maracaibo, Maicao, Riohacha, Santa Marta and Cartagena.

If you take the northern route to Colombia you should have no problems at all.

Check out the area around Santa Marta-really beautiful!!!!

News reports here on Colombian television are reporting a lot of devastation and significant loss of life in Colombia due to the heavy rains especially in the coffee region (eje cafetero)
