Margarita Island things to do

We will be calling at Margarita Island on a cruise and we were just wondering the distance between the port and Angel Falls? Is it accessible? Also is it safe just to grab any taxi? any other suggestions would be helpful.I am 50 and my daughter is 17, are we safe to walk round freely?

Organized excursions to Angel Falls require at least a day due to the fact a flight is required to get there from MI.

The cruise port is in a secluded area but there is a lot of nice beach to walk on with a couple of places to buy food and drinks. If you want to go into town you'll be able to get a cab at the port.

You want to exercise a bit of caution when selecting a cab. There are registered cabs and non-registered. The registration is displayed on the front windshield. There are also several cab companies operating on MI that display signs on the roof of the cab. These are fine to use.

There is lots to do on MI.

1. Beaches - lots of beaches to visit; each with its own distinct appeal

Playa El Yaque - very close to port and one of the best windsurfing spots in the world.

Playa Caribe - on the north shore; considered by many to be MI's best beach

Playa El Agua - on the east side; is the most popular beach on MI.

Playa Manzanillo - located in the northeast corner of MI and the location of a small fishing village. Great place for a seafood lunch and day at a beach with calm water.

Playa Zaragoza - nice beach in bay with places to buy food and drink.

2. Tours

- jeep safari; a fun cruise around the island that includes drinks and food

- Isla Coche; a cataraman excursion to a small island located a few kms south of MI

- round the island tour; explore the geography and history of MI

I suggest contacting one of the local tour guides to see what they can do for you. They offer all the usual tours but are usually quite open to personalized tours that will cater to your interests.

Another suggestion is using the services of Marcella & Steve Tinsman & their "Crusin-n-Style" Island tours. They do a lot of tours for ship passengers. They are American & Have an air conditioned Ford Explorer.

They have tours of 4, 6 & 8 hours that include many areas of Margarita Island as well as things like the La Restinga Lagoon.
