Margarita - first time.

We would be 6 adults travelling together, 50-70 yrs old. We are looking for a medium sized resort, clean, good food, good mixed drinks, and a nice beach for swimming. We've been looking at Dunes Beach Resort. Any suggestions and any information is appreciated. Thaks.

Dunes is a nice resort, a little out of the way but if you are on an "all inclusive" that shouldn't matter. Beach is pretty good.

Not much outside the resort in terms of restaurants, etc.

For that you would need a beach like Playa El Agua.

The Dunes is a beachfront property which located in a scenic area. While I personally haven't been to the resort I have heard many good things about it. Down the road is Playa Zaragoza; a nice beach nestled in a small bay. There you will find a little boardwalk with some shops, snack bars and restaurants. A little more than a year ago there was a guy with a cart on the boardwalk selling very tasty pina coladas and passion fruit dacquiris. The Dunes is a short taxi ride away the small city Juan Griego and the beaches of Playa Caribe, Playa Manzanillo and Playa El Agua.

Another AI property which may interest you is Lagunamar Resorts. Its a large property that operates a shuttle bus service to take you to various parts of the property. The beach area is a nice place to spend the day but the swimming is not the greatest due to rough water. The big plus with Laguanamar is it has a variety of pools, restaurants and bars.

Margarita ohh beautiful...we go there every year since 1995,we bought a beautifull condo there too right on the ocean....it is a large island that offers a variety of accomodotions from basic to real luxury ones. The Dunes is a little far from the movida but a nice place to stay, water is supposed to be a little colder than Playa el Agua o el Yake or Isla de Coce. A true paradise are Los Roques yes indeed,a trip is really worth to ,2/3 days are enough to see all, then Porlamar is the place to enjoy gourmet restaurants at cheap!wanderfull locations and quality of food...Cafe' Guayoyo, and all the places in Pampatar are a great surprise...and the dollar so powerfull you can't believe how cheap is to live there as a king.you must know anyway how to go around, better to hear from some local agency as Paola Guarino for exemple.I always contact her also for any info.i can provide her ph nr.in case.definitely the best adress for an helping person, not Venezuelan...too.

Stopped there on a curise once, and loved it, maybe 2011 will be our return trip. since mig-admin is from Toronto- tell me if it is better to drive to Toronto and fly or try to fly from Buffalo - is the airfare any less expensive thru Canada? and do you fly to the island itself or Caracas and take a boat, small plane?

If you are coming in the winter months it would be easier to go to Toronto & take the Transat flight direct to Margarita.

You can buy an "all inclusive" package or, even better, buy "air only" and stay at one of the many independent B&B's (posadas) here on the island.

As PlayaElAgua says you can get an All Inclusive package with Nolitours if you choose to fly out of Toronto between December and April. The good things about AI packages is that they are relatively inexpensive and you don't have to worry about a thing. The package includes flight, transfers, hotel, food, and drinks The bad things are that the planes are cramped and the airport can be busy.

If you don't want an all-inclusive or are planning a trip between May and November or would like to stay more than 2 weeks then Toronto would not be a good choice as airfares can be expensive. In Feb. Air Canada wanted more than $1200 to fly to Caracas. You probably would be better off flying to Florida and booking a flight to Caracas, Venezuela or Barcelona, Venezuela and getting a connecting flight to MI. It also possible to fly to places like Trinidad or Costa Rica and get flights to MI from those countries..
