Accomodation Moremi and Savuti

Hi

Is it essential to book accomodation or can we just arrive at Savuti and Moremi and find place to stay. If we have rooftop tents, can we stop anywhere ?

We do not like to be held to a fixed itinerary but will if this is what is needed.

Also, can we drive from Savuti to Moremi in mid september ?

You really do need to book in advance. Driving into the Moremi Game Reserve requires you to purchase day passes - if you want to be in the Park fro more than one day, you will need to provide written confirmation of your campsite booking.

safari child is right - before you will be allowed to enter the Moremi and Chobe(savuti) parks you have to show proof of reservations as to where you are going to stay each night for the duration that you are staying inside the park.

And you can not just camp anywhere - you can only camp in designated campsites, There are four in the Moremi- Khwai(North Gate), South Gate, Xakanaxa and Third Bridge.

In the Savuti there is only one site then there are a couple more in the northern area of Chobe around Kasane.

How far in advance you book sites is up to you although for September which is very peak season i would recommend booking as far in advance as possible. There is only a very limited number of camping slots especially in savuti and they get booked up very quickly in peak season.

You can try just pitching up in maun or kasane and trying to make bookings but there is a good chance that you will not find much left especially if you are trying to get several consecutive nights.

I am not sure how long you want to come for but as a guideline I would say that Third Bridge and Khwai sites offer the best game viewing opportunities in the moremi and 5 nights split between these sites would allow you to see a lot.

Savuti is a must and 3-4 nights here would be a good amount of time.

In terms of getting between Savute and Moremi in September - this should not be a problem. It should be possible to take the direct route straight from savuti to khwai or vv but just check the river levels with the park authorities when you are there. In past years they have been very high around the khwai area and this meant that you had to take a long detour via south gate in the moremi!

Also a quick note re your vehicle - if it is fitted with a roof top tent then I am guessing it is a heavy duty 4WD vehicle like a land rover, landcruiser/hilux or similar- you will need it. The terrain in these parks is very tough with dirt tracks at best and lots of deep sand, This is not the place even for the 4WD SUV vehicles like the Rav4.

Finally, I would strongly recommend trying to have a satellite phone with you. There is no mobile phone reception in most parts of the parks here and if you get stuck or breakdown then it could be a long time before anybody comes along and finds you. And dangerous wild animals roam around freely in the parks here so it is far too dangerous to leave your vehicle to go and get help.

Along with a sat phone, it helps to have a gps. If you breakdown, it would be nice to have accurate coordinates where that just might be. The parks are not well marked with signs.
