Mount Longonot or Hell's Gate

We are travelling with 2 kids (4 & 7) to Kenya and are wondering of a place to break our Journey a little bit from Wildlife and do some hiking in between Mara and Amboseli. The tour operator is suggesting Mount Longonot and/or Hell's gate. Which one would the group suggest is better (and why)? Also, is there another suggestion for a place to get out and hike/walk around/sighseeing in between Mara and Amboseli?

Absolutely Hell's Gate. Very popular, quite a bit of (safe) plains wildlife, beautiful landscape. Longonot, on the other hand, is a rather impressive dormant/active volcano, but not appealing in the same way. It's fun to walk round the rim, but a bit of a slog up, and you would definitely end up carrying the 4yo, unless s/he's very mature and up for it. HG is a place you can hang out for the day (hire bikes? take a picnic?) whereas Longonot is more of a one-off, half-day climbing activity.

As for somewhere else between the Mara and Amboseli, that place is probably Nairobi. Be sure to go to Nairobi National Park, and also visit the elephant orphanage. It's inside the park, and only visitable from 11-12noon daily.

Hope that helps a bit!

I agree with yankari. Longonot is a nice hike with great views but no significant wildlife.

Hells' Gate in Naivasha. Plenty of lovely lakeside hotels too. You can take boat ride on lake to vew hippos. If you can spend O/N overnight in Naivasha, even better.
