How windy?

We think cabarets sounds ideal for us but do we have to compromise what appears to be the calm Caribbean side of the island for the windy Atlantic side. We will be there late jan early February . We live on the northern coast of England and so get pretty fed up with wind. Is it really windy through the day and evening. Is it too windy to eat out at night.is the weather generally dry at that time of year. Is it worth going to Sousa for our days ? Is it a bit more sheltered? Thanks in advance for your replies.

It can be breezy during the mid day but not windy season yet. When living there we never had a problem eating outside at the condo or in town. As you walk closer to town the wind tends to be less.

Heading to the beach in Sosua a time or two is a good idea just for variety and a different kind of beach.

I don't think we ever had a problem to eat out on the beach because of wind, except when that there was a bad storm passing by. There is a breeze at night during the winter but not strong winds.

Now, depending on where you are at the beach during the afternoon it could be windy and bothersome with the sand if you lay down on the beach. That would be mostly in Bozo beach and Kite beach. Walk a block toward the center of town (where most restaurants/bars are) towards Canarete beach, and you won't feel the flying sand at all.

Late Jan is the start of the windy season, and during the day the wind is typically 15-20 k of wind. By evening the wind calms down.

If you're looking to escape the wind, Cabarete, a popular kitesurfing and windsurfing destination, is not the ideal place. Samana bay might suit you better.

It's not windy enough to stop you from going.

Sosua has less wind but both are awesome places to be on vacation

Enjoy!!

The alize, which serves as an additional thermal power, blows regularly throughout the year (North East), but is more common in the summer. Therefore, you can usually sail with winds above 20 knots.
