Contact North Coast Divers in Sosua:

http://www.northerncoastdiving.com/

They have full training facilities and also offer a discover scuba class which includes a short ocean dive.

I checked with them last may for a friend of mine before we went. if i remember right it was between 400 and 450 for open water diver. they seemed nice and professional. he got certified before we traveled to the DR. but we did dive with these guys while there and they were good to dive with. They watched over the newer divers really well, which is a good thing

you can do a scuba dive 'trial' which means you will get briefed in theory and then practical in the sea - which will last in total a few hours and you will not be qualified. You do not need any PADI card or qualification for this and most dive centres will offer this for approx £50.

You only get a PADI card once you have completed an actual PADI dive course and are qualified.

The first is the Open Water Diver (approx £200) which usually takes 5 days: 3 days theory and confined pool dives, then 2 days open water (sea) dives. this is your first real qualification and you need this to scuba dive anywhere. You can dive anywhere to a depth of 18m.

The second is the Advanced Diver (approx £140) which takes 5 additional dives - 2 of which are compulsory, 3 optional choices. This will then allow oyu to dive to a depth of 40m.

I studied my Open Water when on hols in Egypt which does take a small chunk out of your holiday and then completed the 3 optional dives so i was part-way through my advance.

When i retured to my next hol i completed the 2 specialist dives to become an Advance Diver.

My partner has studied half of his Open Water course here in UK swimming pools and will complete the Ocean Dives when on holidays.

You can also learn your theory via web from PADI.

Hope this helps.

whats the diving like off Sosua. I have read bad reports. Are there any other dive sites that arent millions of miles away that may be a better option.

I personally do not dive. I prefer to snorkel. However, with that being said, my cousin dives in Sosua. As a matter of fact, she was recently certified in Sosua. She loves it. She's always saying how beautiful it is and what a great time she has. She's never had a bad experience.

North coast dive http://www.northerncoastdiving.com does offer trips to the Rio San Juan area with a boat ride through the mangrove forest and some very nice dives with pretty good coral.

Our club did a couple of dives there a few weeks ago and it was a good time.

I recently was introduced to diving with Northern coast diving and my experience was very positive. I was not Padi certified and started with the Discovery experience. We started in a local pool and I completed my first dive that afternooon. I ended up doing 3 dives over the next few days and was able to experince the thrill of swimming with schools of fish and navigating through the beautiful coral. I highly reccommend this group.
