first time in DR for 30th bday

This will be my first trip to DR. I'll be in Sosua for my 30th bday in July and I have a few questions if anyone could help me out. I'm staying at the Sosua Bay Club.

How is the nightlife and is it far from the area i'm staying in?

Is it better to take cash or use debit card/atm?

I'm interested in snorkeling, what areas are good for snorkeling?

What other activites is a must?

What kind of tours are offered?

Are the ladies friendly?

Hope I didn't ask too many questions.

Hi abryan,

First of all, Happy early B-Day!! At a quick look at your profile I think you chose a great resort for yourself. The Sousa Bay Club is right in the hub of the nightlife of Sosua. No cabs needed. Taking cash or atms is a bit of a personal choice, I took both cash and used the atm which is about a block away from your resort. The atm will give you pesos only so if you are comfortable with useing pesos, it is easy. The beach in front of your reort has a nice reef and has some nice snorkeling so again, very handy spot. Tours and activities will depend on what you like to do. Catamarans are a fun booze cruise. Back country tours are available. lots to do. ( look on this site to the left under "things to do) I liked going to Cabareta, which is about 20 minutes down the road. I was with my wife, mother-in-law and a 23 yr old girl so the ladies paid me no mind but they are "friendly", lol.

I am hoping BrooklynFlyGuy will answer some of your questions as he is a wealth of info. Look up his posts on here, it is worth the read.

Mike :)

You made an excellent choice. Bay club is a good spot, great pool, right at the beach and in the center of everything you want to do. The long beach has a series of huts (casetas) that sell anything you can imagine. There are tours and excursions available and snorkeling to the reef. For the best Pina Colada on the beach go to caseta #180 and see Miguelina. You are walking distance to grocery, disco, pharmacy, town center strip and all the action. Bay Club will let you bring your new friend to the room as long as you go to the front desk with her cedula card (ID). Nearby Cabarete is a great day trip as well. Warm in July so you won't need much more that shorts and sandals.

Hola Abryan! (...and thanks for the shout-out, Mike)!!

As it happens, I'm the Guy who suggested that Abryan venture to Sosua and stay at the SBC for his 30th while we both lounged around on Rio de Janeiro's Copacabana Beach sippin' caipirinhas a coupla weeks ago (seems like months ago now... :-)

You guys have given excellent suggestions - I would add that when you book, ask for a room in the "C" Building on the highest floor (you'll find it's closest to the harbor, just above the waves)... It's really a great look, believe me - you've got the gorgeous view and relaxing sounds of waves right there from your balcony)!

Oh yeah and definitely take a trip to Cabarete! During the day, you've got this lovely stretch of sand with windsurfers doing their flips and skips along the waves, and in the night, you've got some pretty sophisticated spots to have a drink, dine on inspired cuisine from any number of beachside restaurants and of course, dance a bit at a few clubs...

You'll find most Dominicans to be decent folks, some more friendly than others, but all game for a good time, as demonstrated in their ubiquitous musica, Bachata, which will blare from nearly every club or bar, near sand or street, that you may encounter. Bring your smoove two-step and join their swaying hips to Bachata's staccato guitars. Be warned, just like those ice-cold beers they call Presidentes, musica Dominicana is quite addictive!

The party is nonstop in Sosua and Cabarete, so bring your energy as well! My spot for dancing salsa (as well as hip-hop, Reggaeton, merengue and bachata of course) is Classico's, located on Sosua's main strip, Calle Pedro Clisante. There's plenty more here, including Sosua LIfe/Latino's, Happy Bar, and when they close, and you're not done, AfterOne Disco in the Sosua Bay Casino, adjacent to your hotel, opens - serving cold cervesas and hot beats 'til 6:00am, nightly...

You won't be at a loss for things to do, day or night, so no worries there. I would recommend a horse riding tour for you if you're so inclined. Eight hours riding in the campos of the DR, stopping for lunch and drinks, is too much fun for words, I tell ya! Bring your camera, I always do...

Anyrate, it should be a Great trip! And lucky you, more likely than not, Sosua in July won't pull a 'Rio in March' and rain every single, damn, day!!!

See ya on the sand, man! (My birthday's in July as well, tho I passed my 30th a lonnnnng time ago... :-)

Buen viaje! y Feliz Cumpleaños!
