Iberostar is not on Bavaro Beach... anyways....

On the beach facing the ocean... walk to the right there is a beach market right there.

On beach facing ocean.. walk to left past the rest of the Iberostars, then you will hit the Riu resorts. In between the Rius is Caribbean Street.

More shopping if you wanted to take a taxi 10ish minutes into El Cortecito area where there is restaurants, bars, shopping all over. Here is a map of that area.

To finish off Bigjim93's excellent recommendations, no, you do not need a tour guide. It is perfectly safe especially in the El Cortecito area that is teeming with tourist all the time in the high season.

that whole area from southern Bavaro to northern Arena Gorda is commonly named Bavaro,

the whole Area from southern Cap Cana up to Macao is commonly named Punta Cana.

yes, it can be a bit confusing for someone not familiar with the area, and it gets more confusing when reading names/place descriptions etc in sales brochures/online sites of hotels and touroperators alike, as their descriptions are often quiet misleading, up to so often mentioning their great views/location at the Caribbean Sea, while as fact nothing on the DR Eastshores/Punta Cana/Bavaro etc is located anywhere near the Caribbean Sea. we are a Caribbean Island and our Eastshores are located at the waters of the Tropical Atlantic Ocean.

as Jim described above, you have via the beach on both sides of your hotel some shopping within easy walking distance, and you can grab a cabby for a max 15 minutes short ride to the El Cortecito Area where you find many shops, bars, restaurants etc.

i would even prefer to take the cabby for a few minutes longer ride(15-20 minutes max) and visit the area around Jellyfish and Bibijagua on Bavaro Beach, with shops, bars, restaurants etc also available, but way nicer beach than the El Cortecito Beach area.

at all the mentioned areas it is safe to wander around on your own, you do not need any protection/bodyguards.

happy travels

Hi Mike, I'm currently staying at Memories. You mention some shops In the Bavaro beach area by a place called the Jellyfish. Is this area close enough for us to walk to???

Thanks :)

Memories is a long way from the Jellyfish restaurant. It would take hours to walk there.

you need a cabby, which takes only max 15 minutes, but too far for a beachwalk.
