Where to go end of July?

We have decided to head North Arkansas to enjoy outdoor adventures end of July. Would like some advice on where to stay. Would love to stay on the Buffalo River and would like to see the "tallest waterfall" and if possible, kayaking/canoeing...In tow will be two 17 yr old and two 13 year old. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks.

Well, the tallest waterfall in Arkansas is Cedar Falls. More in the central Arkansas region. Just west of the towns of Oppelo and Morrilton. The 95 foot waterfall is located at Petit Jean State Park. Nice hike down to falls. www.petitjeanstatepark.com

In the Ponca/Boxley area is a waterfall located in a cave. It's pretty interesting. Take a flashlight. You will do some duck-walking and crawling to get back to it. It's found on the Lost Valley Trail. The waterfall is in Eden Falls Cave. The trail is located at Buffalo National River, at the Lost Valley Campground, off Highway 43 between Ponca and Boxley.

1. Normally Arkansas waterfalls run a little dry by late July. The best waterfall book is Arkansas Waterfalls by Tim Ernst, available at www.cloudland.net.

2. I usually camp on the Buffalo. There are several cabin groups along the river, some good and some just fair. The few I know to be good are showing to be booked up for July. You might check the availability of the National Park Service cabins at Buffalo Point. www.nps.gov/buff

3. This location is not on the Buffalo but you might find it interesting: www.longbowresorts.com

4. The Mountain View area could be a good base for you. Music, caverns, creeks etc. Here is one place to stay near there: www.almostheavenacres.com
