Cruise Stop in Durres

Our cruise ship will be stopping here. Does anyone know if it is easy to get around and explore on our own or should we join a land tour?

There isn't that much to see in Durres. You can easlily visit it in am hour or two on your own. Do you plan to go to Tirana ? There are frequent busses.

Thanks for the tip. Tirana is mentioned in brackets on the itinerary. Is it worth a trip and how far away is it?

First of all, welcome in Albania.

You can easily visit Durres on foot within two hours.

There are buses every half hour to Tirana. You can go on your own.

But I sugest to take the tour. They manage to make a good intinerary, so you can visit both Kruja old town and Tirana the capital and when you come back perhaps you have some time to walk in Durres.

Do not miss:

1. Kruja Castle and "Skanderbeg" National Museum

2. Albanian Historic National Museum in Tirana

Enjoy your time.

Durres is not a big city but has some lovely things, there is the amphitheatre and next to that the rotunda castle for a drink (or get a sufflaqe/kebab from the fast food bar next to it, they are good!) Walk along the sea front, its very quiet in the afternoon and many rides closed but its okay. Ice cream from the gelataria here is vital. Kruja is wonderful too, but I wouldn't go from Durres to Tirana if that is planned another time. Durres is laid back so if you want fast paced look around, packed full don't expect it. There is not that much and some of what there is has not been appreciated.

Does anyone know if there are guides and vans at the Durres cruise terminal that would be offering to take tourists on a day to Tirana and Kruja? Has anyone tried this and if so, how much did it cost? We are a large group of 11 people. The cruise ship charges $115 per person - multiply that by 11 is a lot of money.

Are taxis pretty safe in Albania?

Just want to thank everyone for their advice and report on our day stop in Albania for other potential visitors. We were a group of 11 off a cruise ship with a 10 hour stop in Durres in late September. We had booked a local guide and a van, the original guide was unable to make it but he sent a great substitute, Dorian Disha.

He was enthusiastic and gave us a lot of information about Albanian history and local culture. He arrived in a new, clean, Mercedes van and drove us to Kruje, Skanderberg castle and the ethnographic museum, the old street market and then arranged for us to have lunch in Tirana at a restaurant serving the locals. We visited all the places we wanted to visit, including the Art Gallery and then he took us back to Durres to see the amphitheatre in good time to get back on board.

It was a great experience. He was helpful and responsive to our requests. At one point, one of our group got lost and didn't arrive at the meeting place, but he had the forethought of getting our guide's phone number, which he called. Dorian walked immediately to where he said he was and brought him back to our group. We were thankful for that. I highly recommend him. could you kindly share which company you were going to use originally? The guide you had is no longer with that company. We too are coming to Durres on a cruise ship and are a bit stumped. thank you
