Tsuruga comes highly recommended by a friend who had stayed there. It's not cheap, but he says it's worth every yen, esp. the outdoor onsen.

We did find a cheaper stay, but regretted not taking his advice.

Hi there

there isn't much cheap in Akan...but depending on the season and day you can actually get good deals at some of the big hotels (specially if you go for rooms with no lake view etc)...it is worth looking at their websites.

Part of the pleasure of Akan is spending lots of time in a big hotel with its gorgeous spas...so it might be worth spending a little money.

Minshuku Yamaguchi - right at the end of the village near the Ainu culture road is a family run old guest house...they don't speak English but they are welcoming to foreigners.

If you get to Japan and get a Japanese person to call for you the telephone number is 0154 67 2555 - I think they charge about Y5,000 per night - dinner and breakfast is extra...

it is run by an old couple and although it isn't a smart place...you can pay to go and use the spas at the big hotels.

so...you may as well pay a bit extra and STAY at one of the big hotels for about Y8,000 to Y10,000 a night...
