Kangra Valley toy train

Hello all, hope you can help again. You've been terrific so far.

We have three days after visiting Amritsar and would like to experience the Kangra Valley rail trip but have to be in near New Delhi on the fourth day.

So we're looking for a short itinerary that would give us the best look at the montains but not be so swift that there is barely time to enjoy the experience. [ not asking for much, are we ;-) ]

Am wondering if it is preferable to go the whole length or would only part of it would be worthwhile. Also, where would the best place be to stay.

I experienced the toy train from Pathankot to Kangra Mandir in Oct/2010.

For the train's schedule, please surf http://indiarailinfo.com/.

Buses from/to Amritsar & Pathankot or Kangra can surf http://hrtc.gov.in/route.asp

My itinerary was;

Delhi- Pathankot (night train): 22:10/07:50.

Pathankot- Kangra Mandir (TOY TRAIN): 10:00/14:30, 15Rs.

Kangra Mandir- Kangra(TukTuk, auto-rickshaw): 14:40/14:50.

Kangra- Dharmasala(freq. long haul bus): 15:00/16:20, 20Rs.

Dhamasala- McLeod Ganj(freq. bus): 16:25/17:00, 10Rs.

You can but TOY TRAIN ticket at Pathankot railway station's ticket counter.

The TOY TRAIN's platform locates at the another side, just cross the foot bridge.

I took a bite before boarding the toy train and stay in McLeod Ganj.

In my memory, Kangra and Pathankot have GHs around the bus station, rail station.

According to my sources, the Kangra Valley Train to Jogindar Nagar is no longer working.

The Kalka to Shimla train is indeed working, and has a beautifully mountainous route.

Hope this helps,

Hi Guys,

There are trains running between Pathankot & Kangra. However unlike Kalka Shimla, these are ordinary trains without the option of AC coaches. For timings you are check the following link : http://erail.in/

I would advice to experience the Jwalamukhi road - Kangra - Palampur stretch since the train passes through Kangra valley offering great views of Dhauladhar ranges. Also, not advisable in months of May/June since it gets very hot en route.

Is it ok to travel with French family with 13 years old daughter in such a ordinary train ??

Is if overcrowded by lots of local and tourist. ??

Always welcome.....

If your concern is overcrowding, you can avoid it by planning to take non peak hour train. Peak hours in himachal would be 5-6 in the evening. As such you won't find many tourists on this. Its used mostly by locals. A 2-3 hour ride on the train should be fun..... Don't suggest long journey.
