Grocery shopping on Crete

I will be in Crete for the last week of September and was wondering which of the 3 popular chains (Lidl, INKA, and Champion) are the best for grocery shopping? Is one better than the other for fresh meat or produce? Seems like Lidl is the best but not having shopped anywhere but Plakias supermarkets (which is where I am going) I would not know. Thanks for any info you can give me.

Sincerely;

Ron

Lidl is a no-frills supermarket, the basics are very reasonably-priced but you probably won't find much in the way of anything exotic, and I doubt they have a deli or meat counter - but I may be wrong, I can't remember. Certainly in the UK they don't.

INKA is a Cretan chain. Champion - I think they are now either "B" (Vasiliadis) or maybe Marinopolous or Carrefour?? - have various sized places all over Crete and other islands. Another Cretan chain is Ariadne. Also there are Spar (Chalkiadakis) supermarkets in big towns, the nearest one to Plakias is Rethymnon. The bigger the store, the more likely they are to have the things you are looking for.

But if you are staying in Plakias, I guess you will only have the choice of shops there - or maybe you are looking to shop elsewhere to and from Plakias?

There is definitely a small Ariadne in Pakias:

(sorry about the link, I can't get tiny.url to shorten it so you'll have to copy/paste)

but I suspect there aren't any other chain supermarkets, just some local ones.

For fruit and veg I'd look for a greengrocers or a stall at the side of the road, but if you can find a big Carrefour or Spar then they are pretty good. Meat is a bit more difficult, particularly if you don't speak much Greek as I know to my cost...

Hi there

Yes as Steve says lidl are brilliant for cheap products....and you will find that you can't just shop in lidl as they don't sell everything,,,,but what they are brilliant for is water and can and bottled drinks .....oh the odd socket set, bathroom cabinet etc...if you haven't been to a lidl before you will understand after you have :-)

Plakias supermarkets have everything you need. For fresh meat , there is also a small butcher.

There are a number of small but perfectly adequate supermarkets and butchers in Plakias and Plakias is on a small scale that you will be able to find the one you feels fits your needs the best very easily. One fruit and veg shop is a little further away from the others (don't recall the name) is a little further away from the others but is worth seeking out. It is just beyond the Alianthos Garden Hotel on the main road into the village. I have provided a link to a map on the Plakias Forum for you here http://www.plakias.co.uk/Plakias.kml

If the link doesn't work for some reason come back and I'll have another another go for you. The forum is also a good source of information by the way.

There are no large supermarkets in Plakias of the type you mention. They are all local some a little larger than the others. You will be able to get most things if you have a good look around.
