Fiestas in Soller

To whom it might concern:

In May (Second week) you can attend the fiesta "Sa Fira" and "Es Firó". Traditional fiestas in Soller and Puerto de Soller to remembering the battle between the Moors and Christians.

May 17 the square of Soller will host "La feria de la naranja de Soller". The local orange business will have stands in which they will offer products to the visitors.

Wish I could have been there!

The newsletter of Gran Hotel Soller said that:

Es Firó: come and get to know one of the most popular fiestas in Mallorca

Many towns in the Mediterranean have as their main fiesta the commemoration of conflicts that they suffered long ago against Turkish troops and pirates from overseas in an attempt to avoid their continuous raids. On the island of Mallorca, two of these are still preserved: one is that of the Moors and Christians at Pollensa which takes place every August, and the other is Es Firó de Sóller, which occurs on the Monday following the second Sunday in May. This year, Es Firó will take place on 12th May, and on this day many thousands of people will travel to the Port de Sóller to witness, from 15.30 onwards, the landing of the Turkish and Algerian troops and the re-enactment of the various battles that these held with the Christians along the almost 5 kilometres that separate the port from the town of Sóller. The residents of the locality will be, one year more and in accordance with an ancestral and inherited family tradition, in charge of bringing to life both armies and celebrating at the end, the traditional victory of the Believers over the Heretics, the fighting culminating in the Plaza de la Constitución. Although now it is played out in a humorous and festive manner, no-one has ever wanted to forget how in 1561 a fleet comprising 23 Turkish boats arrived in Mallorca and between 1,700 and 1,800 Turks and Algerians disembarked at the Port de Sóller with the intention of invading the island. They were confident that they would be able to catch the people of Sóller, the Sollerics, unawares, but ultimately, the rapid intervention of the townsfolk made for the expulsion of the Moors and victory for the Christians. If you still don’t know Es Firó, make a date and come and discover one of the most popular fiestas in Mallorca.

The Carrefoc is the next to last Saturday in August. i'd really hate to spoil the excitement for you - but as you insist!!

At about 10pm the cafes in the square close - the stage is set up outside the town hall and a play about the battle between good and evil takes place. Much scary loud music, much activity among the crowd by really scary "demons".

After the main bit of the play thousands and thousands of fire crackers are set off from strings among the trees (look at the burned sign above Bar Es Firo - this is how the burn got there!!)and the demons move among the crowds scattering more fire crackers, most people douse themselves in water just in case!!

Right at the end everyone troops round to the square outside the market where you can be further drenched by the fire brigade.

Messy but wild fun!
