For Santa Monica it is quite convenient, a short 15 minute hop on the city bus. And from LAX airport you have the Flyaway Coach for $10 that brings you within a few blocks walk of the W. There is also a quick bus to the must-visit Getty Center, and the 9 year old will probably enjoy visiting La Brea Tar Pits which is also easy on the bus, and is just a short walk from The Grove (shopping) and The Farmer's Market (dining).

Hollywood is a longer bus ride on the #2 bus, 25 minutes, but it is a nice tour along the Sunset Strip. Get off at La Brea or Highland, and walk north (towards the mountains) one long block to Hollywood Boulevard/Walk of Fame.

Westwood is a good choice for July because it will not be as hot as in Hollywood. However, whether it is convenient for your "tourist attractions" depends on what you plan to see and do, the attractions are quite spread out in Los Angeles. You'll probably want to visit the Science Center and the Natural History Museum on the same block. That will be a long day. You can plan by visiting metro.net, the trip planner, and putting in Westwood as your departure point and Natural History Museum as your destination.

Just to expand - bus 761 goes to the Getty - you can look up its stops but I think the nearest to the W is probably Wilshire Blvd. and Westwood Blvd.'s intersection. Bus 720 runs on Wilshire blvd. - take it west and you'll go to Santa Monica. Take it east and you can exit near the famous Rodeo Drive in Beverly Hills (if I recall correctly the actual stop is at Wilshire blvd. and Beverly Drive) - take it further and if you exit at Fairfax Ave. you'll be near the La Brea Tar Pits mentioned above, and from there you can walk to Farmer's Market / the Grove or you can wait at Wilshire Blvd. and Fairfax Ave. for bus 217 or 780 headed north which will take you to Farmers Market / The Grove as well - in fact stay on 217 or 780 as it heads north and eventually it will head east to Hollywood - for that you can exit at Hollywood Blvd. and Highland Ave.'s intersection.

Ita a good location since your walking distance to wilshire blvd where the bus stops are located. You are also close to westwood blvd where all the shops and restaurants are at. There is also an in n out hamburger near westwood bldv.

You should condider doing the ghetty museum , there is no parking so plan on taking a taxi.
