W Westwood

We are staying in July In the W Westwood, someone told me it is a bad location as traffic is really heavy during the day. Is it true ? Also any recommendation on a LA limo tour ?

Thanks

You posted this in the Beverly Hills forum. Westwood is part of Los Angeles, not Beverly Hills. IMHO, the area is fine. Almost everyplace will have bad traffic at some point during the day. Where are you going? Will you be driving? At what time of day? We've stayed in Westwood Village, at the Tiverton House (a few blocks from your hotel, it appears), and quite enjoyed being near the many restaurants, as well as the UCLA campus. The W is on Hilgard Avenue? Not a real busy street.

Westwood Village itself has lots of major businesses, including banks and offices, and a wide range of restaurants, including upscale places and those catering to university students. There are lots of apartments and smaller homes there, but, just beyond, some very upscale homes. Bel Air is quite close. All in all, a nice area. Whether it's best for you, people would opine on if you gave more info on your plans. But I don't see traffic being any more of an issue there than in most places in L.A.

There can certainly be traffic in that area, especially on the main roads nearby (Wilshire blvd. and Sepulveda Blvd., as well as the 405 freeway) and especially during rush hours (more or less 7-9AM and 4-7PM on weekdays) but the same is true pretty much anywhere else you might stay. I don't think its that bad there outside of rush hour and that is a really nice hotel.

Depending on what else is on your itinerary, you may be able to find a similar quality hotel that's better located for around the same money, so if you wouldn't mind filling us in on your itinerary, we might be able to suggest alternatives or let you know if the W is a good choice for your itinerary.

Wilshire can be absolutely terrible through that corridor, but you can avoid most of it by taking Westholme or one of the other streets to the east - they are lead to the W. If coming from the west, cut through at Veteran to avoid some of the traffic. Look at a map to see alternatives.

Thanks for all your replies. We won't have a car. We are visiting the Observatory, Hollywood avenue and spending much of our time in Santa Monica. But Hotels in Santa Monica are too expensive. Thanks guys

Well, the good news is that you can get right to Santa Monica in a couple of ways via bus - you can use Metro Bus 720 or 20 on Wilshire Blvd. to get to downtown Santa Monica, or use Big Blue Bus #3 which stops at many locations near the "W".

To get to the observatory, its only possible to go all the way there via public transportation on Saturday and Sunday. On those days, you can take bus 720 east on Wilshire Blvd. to the subway station at Wilshire Blvd. and Vermont Ave, then take the subway one stop to the Sunset / Vermont station and from there you take the DASH weekend observatory shuttle bus to the observatory. Other days, you can get to Sunset / Vermont and take a taxi there, or if you don't mind a more expensive fare, just take a taxi directly from your hotel.

For Hollywood, take 720 east to Fairfax Ave., and then Metro bus 217 or 780 north on Fairfax Ave. which will eventually take you to the intersection of Hollywood Blvd. and Highland Ave, which is the touristy center of Hollywood where you'll find the Chinese Theater, Walk of Fame, views of the Hollywood sign etc.
