Elan Hotel Modern

I have heard some very favorable reviews on Elan Hotel Modern. On their website it looks a bit small..........is it a safe neighborhood?

Has anyone stayed there? Visiting LA as a mom and daughter (15) trip in the next couple of weeks. Is there good transportation in this district? We'd like to visit Graumanns, Santa Monica Pier, Rodeo Drive, maybe a taping of a show? How about the LACity bus tour....is that something we should consider?

It is a safe neighborhood across from the Beverly Center. It does look SMALL on the website, I see what you mean, but it is larger (and older-looking) actually.

There is decent transportation in the area but Santa Monica Pier would be 2 or 3 buses and probably 1.5 hours.

Another hotel to look at would be HILGARDHOUSE.COM which is in Westwood near UCLA. The Blue Bus around the corner from this hotel will take you to Santa Monica, the city bus number 2 will be about a 25 min ride to Highland Avenue (then walk one long block up to Graumans). There are 3 or 4 buses that go to the Beverly Hills Rodeo Drive area from here (near a university as you can imagine the bus service is good and frequent). I think a 15 year old would like the Westwood area more than the Elan area unless she is REALLY into shopping malls in which case the Elan is at the Bev Center and only a mile from THE GROVE.

When you decide where you're staying, take the address of your hotel and go to www.mta.net where you can trip plan. Put your starting address and the address of where you want to go (such as "Santa Monica Pier" or "Hollywood and Highland" or "The Grove") and you can print out a bus schedule and directions to take with you. Everything in the area runs STRAIGHT north to south or east to west so it is pretty hard to get lost if you know where the sun rises and sets.

If you type in a search in the general California Forums, type in Elan Modern, you'll see it's a much discussed hotel this summer. HopSkipJump, our other Local Expert often recommends it because of the ease with public transportation and its location.

Here's a link to a thread from last week, just copy and paste:

Here's a link to the Trip Advisor page on the Elan Hotel Modern:

Once you've linked to this page, if you look to the rtight of the little photo, you'll see a link that says: HOTEL PHOTOS. The hotel is definitely a "bourtique-style" hotel (just 50 rooms).

For someone without a car, this is a great location for a couple of reasons:

1. It's very central to the types of places of interest to tourists

2.The hotel is within a couple of blocks of the Beverly Center and the Beverly Connection which are large shopping, dining and movie centers. There is a lot of variety as far as restaurants in all price ranges within walking distance of the hotel.

3. The neighborhood is popular for locals as well as tourists and is extremely safe.

4. Just west of the hotel (at the corner of Beverly Bl and La Cienega Bl) are bus stops that will take you in all four directions within the city:

a. Go West to Beverly Hills/Rodeo Drive (10 minutes)

b. North (and then the bus turns east) to downtown Hollywood (the intersection of Hollywood Bl & Highland Av) in 25 minutes.

c. East to Farmer's Market, CBS Television City (taping of a show) and the Grove (5 minutes)

d. South (and then west via a 2nd bus) to Santa Monica in 51 minutes (The #705 RAPID Bus south transferring at Venice Bl & Cadillac Av to the #534 Metro bus in a westerly direction)

Info for bus routes and schedules is available at MTA.NET.

Use BEVERLY BL / LA CIENEGA BL as your starting point. (Don't forget the slash between the street names)..

Be sure to buy a $3 DAY PASS from the first bus driver of the day which will give you unlimited rides on the buses and the metro rail trains.

There are a number of companies that provide tours of the L.A. area and vicinity. One of the oldest companies is STARLINE TOURS which has its office in the courtyard of the Chinese Theatre on Hollywood Bl, 1/2 block west of Highland Av. Go to STARLINETOURS.COM and click on HOLLYWOOD in the red area on the left side of their home page for the list of tours eminating from this location. (You can also have them pick you up at your hotel but since you are a short bus ride away, I'd just go there -- especially since on some of their tours they do not offer "pick up service" at the hotels).

BTW, there is a bus system called THE DASH which runs smaller buses around popular areas (the routes go in a kind of circle, concentrating on a specific area). There is a DASH BUS (called the HOLLYWOOD / WEST HOLLYWOOD DASH that picks up on the corner of Beverly Bl and La Cienega -- 2 blocks west of the Elan and takes you to Hollywood Bl & Highland Av. The DASH buses cost only 25 cents (and you cannot use the $3 DAY PASS on them).

Info on the DASH buses is at http://www.ladottransit.com/dash/

but their website is kind of hard to use. Keep in mind that you will probably only use the HOLLYWOOD / WEST HOLLYWOOD DASH and the FAIRFAX DASH.

If you select these DASH buses on their website, it will display a map of the route. The map can be ZOOMED in upon by sliding the little button to the right of the map. You can also move the map around (to see stuff that's 'off the edge" by clicking on the map and dragging it).

The corner of Beverly Bl and La Cienega is a transfer point for the two DASH buses listed above. So, you have great bus access there.

BTW, once you get to Hollywood & Highland, you can hop on the redline metro rail which will take you north to Universal Studios (a 4-minute ride to the Universal Studios stop) or south to downtown L.A. (a 15-20 minute ride). And remember, your DAY PASS is good for the non-DASH buses and the trains as well!

Have a great time in L.A.

I saw this hotel on my way to the Beverley shopping centre on the bus.

I was staying at Hollywood Boulevard so the Elan is a good hotel if you are travelling by bus and there are a lot of retail outlets which you can have access to.
