newby campers

My family wants to go tent camping in Big Bear sometime in July. I requested the visitors guide but other than that have NO CLUE where to begin to plan our trip. I saw old posts about different campsites. Dogwood and one other. Anyway I dont want to get there (we've never been) and wish we were somewhere else. If the combined family comes we will have kids ranging in age from 1 to 14. We would like to be close to water, decent bathrooms (not outhouses) showers would be nice for the littlest ones. Can anyone help guide me in the right direction?? Thanks!

The largest developed campground in the area is Serrano. They have large sites, baths and showers. But they fill up quickly. We've stayed there several times. More info here:

Pine Knot is a smaller campground but doesn't have showers and is farther from the lake.
