Can we get to Bodie Ghost Town Ca without a car? and How???

We can easily get as far as Bridgeport or Lee Vining, or even the end of the sealed road, but we will be driving a rental and they always specifiy NO dirt roads. Is there a service in either town that can take us there, or do buses go to Bodie from any place? I would love to bring our own car but it would get awfully wet crossing the Pacific ocean!

Without a car, your option is to walk (thousands of pioneers did that), unless you find an escorted tour out of SF, etc. Have you actually read the provisions in your rental agreement or do you just assume "always"? I'd personally not hesitate to take a rental car on that road, as long as I drove slowly and there hadn't been heavy rains, etc. making the road worse than usual. The park's Web site gives a phone number you can call for current road conditions. You can also ask in Lee Vining. If you still hestiate, the only option is to not go. Plenty of other things to see in the area (e.g., Mono Lake Tufa Towers).

Hello madgcsh, and welcome to the Bridgeport forum.

The road off of US Route 395 to Bodie, California State Route 270, is well maintained and paved but for the last two miles of the route going in. These last two miles are not dirt per se, but gravel and with a bumpy ride from the grading done by the road equipment. I would have no hesitation taking a rental car there myself. Naturally, I would be driving about 10 to 15 miles an hour maximum over these last two miles, taking care to not get the undercarriage or lower body damaged.

Any questions, please contact your hire car (car rental) agency and get an explanation of what they expect from you when driving their automobile.

Enjoy your travels with us.

You will see plenty of rental cars(and motorhomes) at Bodie. I wouldn't be worried about doing the drive. I've done it several times in rentals myself.

Thank you all; I will certainly be asking the rental company what their rules are, but if they say no, we can't go to Bodie. A pity, because we want to go to both Las Vegas and Yosemite, so Bodie can be on our way. We are hoping to spend 13 weeks between Nevada, Arizona, California, Oregon and Washington, with a 3 week break in Alaska halfway and stops in both directions at Hawaii - so even a small per day difference in rental cost can blow out to big money. We will probably get a Ford Explorer as we did last trip. I'm quite confident of the driving, I just don't want a big penalty from the rental company if we get a broken windshield or similar. Either way it should be a wonderful trip!

We like to live dangerously and visited Bodie several times with our rental cars. Seriously, you really should not worry too much about it. The unpaved part is a little longer (3 miles, timed it...) but there is little chance something will go wrong. Very little chance. We have driven dirtroads to our accomnodations in Australia far worse than the drive to Bodie. And maybe it will be harder to avoid dirtroads driving in Alaska.

Thank you, that's very useful. You're quite right, we live in country Australia and don't have to go far to find really awful unpaved roads - and some pretty bad paved roads ;-) I think we'll do it, especially if we drive an SUV. Can't wait to go but there's a LOT of planning to do first, plus waiting for my husband's long service leave allocation - Sigh!

Not at all, we toured New England in 2004 - fall in Vermont was always on my bucket list, and although we've been there, we'll go again when a few more items are off the bucket list! The plan at the moment is to fly into Las Vegas and go north, seeing the sights of Utah before it gets unreasonably hot. Then circle down thru Colorado and Arizona, go to San Diego and head north, switching from the coastal areas to the high sierras as necessary to take in Solvang, Big Sur, Monterey, Sequoia and Yosemite. We will keep up this zig-zag until we get to Tacoma, then do a loop around the Olympic Peninsula and cross on ferries to Edmonds, doing another loop up through the Cascades to Winthrop and Leavenworth before heading to Sea-Tac for a flight (or Seattle for a cruise) to Alaska. After that, back to Hawaii to walk the lava tubes, then (Sigh!) home. We always vacation in the US, sometimes including a bit of Canada, so our vacations are infrequent but really enjoyable. Last trip (2008) took us from Seattle to South Dakota and Minneapolis via Glacier, Yellowstone and Grand Teton national parks, then Calgary, Drumheller, Prince Rupert, Port Hardy, Great Bear Rainforest, a drive down Vancouver Island and the ferry back to Seattle. LOVED it!

I forgot to say: we're planning on approaching Bodie from Yosemite, through Lee Vining. I want to see the bizarre Mono Lake so we thought that would make sense. Does anyone know what those roads are like in June?

There are 2 visitor center in Lee Vining for Mono Lake. I suggest to visit one of them first to learn about Mono Lake. You can go to south tufas all on paved roads (via120). Last short stretch to the entrance is a good gravelroad. You have to pay a self registrated entrance fee but if you have an America the Beautiful pass just put it on the dash or hang it at the shield.

Wonderful trips! Done them ourselves. In september we hope to make a cruise from Seattle to Alaska and back for 7 days with Holland America Lines but this doesnot include places like Denali NP etc.
