One night accomodation

Hi, I am planning on staying in Cambria evening of 28th September through a road trip from san fran to la.

I was wondering where the best area is? Should I stay on Moonstone Beach or in the town itself?

We are late 20s, enjoy nice restaurants and wine.

I like the sound of being by the sea but, if it is a trek to a decent restaurant I would prefer to be in the town. I also note that prices differ significantly from moonstone to the town and if the inns in the town are very good standard for their price I would prefer to pay less if the accomodation is not much different?

I would also like some recommendations, I have so far narrowed it down to Burton Inn or Bluebird Inn in the town or Little Sur Inn on moonstone. (These are just ones I have looked at, if there are others better please advise!)

Please could you give me some advice on where to stay and the best places?

Should I pre-book?

Thanks

It is a small town . Moonstone Beach is lovely. I think you could stay anywhere there for one night an dbe able to walk to restaurants. If not walkable, the drive would be a very short one. I fyou are particular about where you stay then pre book. It is not during the normal busy tourist season so if you are off the road by early afternoon you should be able to find accomodations if you do not have a particular place in mind.

HI there! Both of the places you mentioned are not on Moonstone Drive. We have only stayed on Moonstone Drive, since we are beach-lovers and love to view the ocean.

The Blue Whale Inn is a very nice B&B, the BW Fireside Inn, and the Pelican Cove Inn where we stayed this past May are all very nice choices for Moonstone Drive.

I have heard good things about the Cambria Pines Lodge also and the Ollallieberry Inn, both off of Moonstone Drive. I would recommend meals at the Black Cat, Robin's, Sow's Ear and the Moonstone Beach Bar & Grill. I have reviews/photos of the majority of Cambria restaurants you may want to check out.

Fermentations is a nice place to wine taste and the Seekers Glass Gallery is also not to miss. I have some photos of the glass work on this forum also. Have a great time in Cambria! :)

Thanks,

How far (by foot and car so I get an idea) is it from the hotels on Moonstone to the Sow's Ear? I have heard so many reports on this I thought I might go there....

We both like to have a glass of wine with our meal so would not be able to drive back....

Hi me again!!

I am considering booking The BlueBird Motel on Main Street. It seems to have pretty decent reviews for a motel that is quoting me $58 plus tax. Cambria is a one stop on my trip (after Las Vegas/San Fran/Pacific Grove - before Santa Barbara/Santa Monica/LA) and I am thinking if it is "OK" whether it may be best to stay here as it seems to be close to the restaurants??? I will be doing a lot of beach stays so unless Moonstone Drive is FANTASTIC I think I can maybe live without paying the extra $150 on one night...

Your views???

Re: Bluebird

You get what you pay for. You will not be impressed with this place. But... you can walk to Sow's Ear, etc. and back to your room easily.

Just another note:

Rather than book ahead, drive down HWY 1 into Cambria and drive along Moonstone Beach Drive first to see if it meets the definition of fantastic. Then cruise through the town on the other side of the highway and take a look at Bluebird in relation to your restaurant of choice and then decide. Since you'll be arriving on a Thursday in late September, most accomodations will not booked up anyway.

Another option is the Olliliberry Inn, which is also in town and a short walk to shops and restaurants. A bit pricier than Bluebird, but you won't get the feeling of being in a roach motel.... not that the Bluebird is ... but, again, you get what you pay for.
