Rincon de la Vieja or Volcano Tenoria area

e are a couple 50+ looking to do a two night stay either Rincon de la Vieja or Volcano Tenoria area (Rio Celeste, Puma reserve, hanging bridges etc).

For those who have been there, which did you like better? We are not interested in zip lining or river rafting but don't mind a casual hike or horseback ride. Hopefully we can find a place that is not full of tours (hacienda guachiplin). Rustic is okay. We were told to look at La carolina lodge which sounds interesting but I think we need our own transport for that.

Coming from Tamarindo (our home base) we are uncertain whether we should rent a car or find a shuttle to take us to and fro.

In our last adventure to Belize we had a shuttle/guide that took us everywhere. A private guide that could show us the 'road less travelled' would be awesome!

Thank you for any insight you can give us.

Well, casual hike, horseback riding, no tour buses, rustic ... you have just described La Carolina Lodge. You should rent a car for a couple of days; driving is not complicated at all. And having one will allow you to incorporate also a short visit toLa Pumas, and maybe Cortez waterfall.
