A week in Carlsbad

We just booked a week at the Carlsbad Inn Beach Resort. Now wondering what to do. We have a grown granddaughter in San Diego. and hope to see her. we spent 3 or 4 days close to downtown San Diego a couple of years ago.

Anything of interest in San Clemente about Reagan family? Have not seen wild animal zoo, Is that good? Have been to one in San Diego, enjoyed that. Any thing of public interest at camp Pendleton?

we will have a car but wondering about taking the train into downtown.

Carlsbad is 30 miles from San Diego. You'll have that 30-mile drive on Interstate 5 every day that you go into San Diego, or else you can take the "Coaster" train from the Carlsbad Village station into either Old Town or downtown San Diego. Frankly for the days you want to be in San Diego, I would stay in the city of San Diego to avoid that driving or train commute.

Carlsbad is a good place to stay if you are visiting Legoland, but that doesn't seem to be in your plans, and would only be in your plans if you had children in the age range for Legoland (I think about 3-10 is the target age range).

San Clemente is where the "Western White House" was when Nixon was president, and lived in retirement after resigning from the Presidency. The home was sold in the late 1980s and is privately owned now and closed to the public. There is a Nixon Library in Yorba Linda, California, in Orange County. The Reagan Library is located in Simi Valley, California, north of Los Angeles.

The former San Diego Wild Animal Park is now known as the San Diego Zoo Safari Park. It is located in San Pasqual, California, east of Escondido, California. It is reasonably close to Carlsbad and to drive to it would be a drive mostly on CA Highway 78 but would require some street driving through Escondido.

Camp Pendleton conducts group tours approximately twice a month. See marines.mil/unit/…CommunityRelations.aspx for details on that. Other than those tours, access to the base is restricted to authosrized personnel and official business.

If you are interested in military history, there is Marine Corps Command Museum located on the Marine Corps Recruit Depot, near the airport not far from downtown San Diego, and the Flying Leatherneck Aviation Museum, located at one corner of Marine Corps Air Station Miramar in San Diego. Both of those are open to the public with free admission. Cabrillo National Monument, in the Point Loma area of San Diego, costs only $5 for the car and has a bit military history as well. The USS Midway Museum is a decommissioned aircraft carrier docked next to downtown San Diego, and you can visit it. See http://www.midway.org/ for prices and hours. That's about it for military-related sites that you can visit in San Diego County.

Just got back a week ago from a week at the Carlsbad Inn. In our opinion it is our favorite resort in California. Will post a review soon. It is a great place and lots of nice places to eat and shop within walking distance. The staff at the Carlsbad Inn really work hard to make sure you have a good stay. Carlsbad is a wonderful small community. There is a train to downtown San Diego if you don't want to drive. We like to go there to relax and have a teenager so this year our big outing was Knotts Soak City in Chula Vista. We also really like Sea World and the San Diego Zoo. There are outlet stores in Carlsbad also. Some day we need to go to the Midway and see the museum. We have not been up to San Clemente except to eat at Wahoos Fish Tacos on the way to Carlsbad.

I don't know if this is your style, but there are some races at camp Pendleton:

You won't find much Reagan stuff in San Clemente. You can visit the Nixon library in Yorba Linda.

You can see the old Nixon White house if you walk the beach north of Trestles. Look for the estate with the big spotlights pointed to the beach and ocean.

Casa Romantica has some interesting exhibits every now and then. Sits on the hill overlooking the San Clemente pier.

While in the area eat at the Fishermans on the pier, or for a big mexican breakfast at a hole in the wall, try LaTiendita on Victoria , one street south of Del Mar across from the new fire station.
