Best Central Location

Wasn't sure where to post this question, however

Like everyone else, we are trying to see as much as possible. We will be arriving SLO from NYC mid-day on Friday in late June. We have to pick up our luggage and our rental car (conservatively puts the time around 3:30 pm). We want to visit Hearst Castle and see a little of the area and don't think we will be able make Hearst Castle on Friday as their last tour is 4:30. Since I'm sure we'll be hungry, even with a quick lunch we'll probably miss the last tour. We plan to be in Napa/Sonoma by Sunday night and also want to spend some time in the Carmel/Monterey area.

Are we better off spending Friday night in the SLO area (I was thinking Cayuous on the beach) and then one night in Bg Sur (Ventana Inn) or staying at the Ventana Inn for both Friday and Saturday nights, relax oat Ventana on Friday, tour Hearst Castle and the surrounding area on Saturday, leave early Sunday for Carmel on our way to Napa? Another option would be to check-out of the SLO area on Saturday - visit Hearst Castle, then drive to Carmel and try and get a room (we prefer small hotels or B&B's) in the Carmel Monterey area on Saturday night? Securing a reservation for just Saturday night in Carmel might be difficult as most places have a 2 night minimum) and that is also the w/e of Carmel's 3 day Blues Festival. Thanks.
