Suggestions - 3 days in Carmel

We arrive at SFO at 9:00 a.m. on Tuesday and have reservations for three nights at the LaPlaya in Carmel.... This is our first trip to the area and we need some advice on what we should plan to do with our time here. We would like to get to Big Sur and definitely to Pebble Beach. We are active and like to walk, bike and hike.... enjoy good, casual restaurants. Suggestions???

Leaving Carmel on Friday morning to head to Sonoma for the weekend. What would be the most scenic route to take for the drive to Healdsburg?

>>>Leaving Carmel on Friday morning to head to Sonoma for the weekend. What would be the most scenic route to take for the drive to Healdsburg?<<<

You have some choices.

1) You can stay on Hwy 1 all the way to San Francisco. After Santa Cruz it is on the coast to the city. This is not the spectacular coast you see in Big Sur, but still very scenic. Then, if you want, after you cross the Golden Gate Bridge, (which is Hwy 101) take the exit to get back on Hwy 1. You will drive on some high cliffs, pass Point Reyes National Seashore, skirt Tomales Bay, go inland, and end up in Bodega Bay. After that you will be on coast again for 10 miles until you cross the Russian River, then you will turn right on Hwy 116 and go to Guerneville.

Here there is a beautiful State Park of ancient redwood trees... Armstrong Grove

www.redwoodhikes.com/Armstrong/Armstrong.html

Healdsburg is only 17 miles from here.

2) Or, you can stay on Hwy 101 to Petaluma (about 30 some miles) and take the East Washington exit, go through town and you will be on the Bodega Highway through some pretty pastoral country to Bodega Bay, then continue as above.

3) Another alternative is to take Hwy 101 from Monterey to Hwy 85, north of Gilroy, and then Hwy 280 into San Francisco...and choose one of the above to get to Healdsburg. Hwy 280 is very scenic as it goes through the foothills of the coast range and has been called "the most beautiful freeway in the world".

If you want to get t Healdsburg fairly quickly, but with a scenic drive, I would take number 3.

Have fun

La Playa is a very nice place to stay! It has recently been remodeled. For some good casual restaurants, check out California Market @ The Highland's Inn, Demetra Cafe, Casanova and Little Napoli.

www.carmelcalifornia.com is an informative website for this area. We were in Carmel on Valentine's Day and enjoyed a very nice lunch at Anton & Michel @ The Courtyard of the Fountains. :)

If you like to walk and hike, I have a web page just for you. www.montereypeninsula.info/guide/walking.htm It describes several locations here, including famous parks, lesser-known parks, and neighborhoods that are ideal for walking and hiking.
