beaches/ swimming?

what would the beaches be like in mid july - would the water be warm?

California isn't in the tropics, so you won't find "warm" water here... ever. Expect cool, overcast (fog) mornings with late morning/afternoon clearing. You can wade in the ocean for brief periods, but even the surfers wear wet suits to prevent hypothermia.

The further south the beach, the warmer the water, but it will still be cold compared to Hawaii or Florida.

Growing up we went to Carpenteria every Sunday in the summer. It was a great beach.

Water temps in southern CA during the summer months are in the mid 60s.
