Ano Nuevo park

I understand that a reservation has to be made for the walk. Can you see anything by just going there. Can you walk along a trail and see the beach?

I had looked at one page, but the one I just looked at does state that we are not allowed Dec 15 - Mar 31 except in reserved tours.

if you just show up there is little to see. The seals are pretty well hidden in the dunes and at the shore and the island offshore. You can hear them though. With reservations you are escorted through in a group. Even with a small airplane you are restricted to a minimum elevation, so not to bother the beasts. A colony of elephant seals has established itself just north of Hearst Castle at San Simeon, and they are right on the beach along hwy 1, so it's pretty hard to keep people from viewing them there. There's even a sign that directs you to "elephant seal viewing area".

Also check Point Reyes area as they have elephant seals. Animal Planet was there they day we happened to be there releasing two pups. We saw part of the crew in the area but at the colony. The release had been earlier in the day.

During the breeding season, all visitors must be on guided walks, for everyone's peace and safety. One of the things the park personnel do is make sure people and elephant seals stay at least 25 feet apart. The adult bulls can weigh a ton or more and be the size of a small car. They can be quite aggressive in breeding season, when they are competing for the attention of the ladies. The females can also be dangerous if provoked, although they are usually petite creatures of 1,000 pounds or less.

The walk is about 3 miles round trip. The guides, either park rangers or volunteer docents, keep track of where on the beaches the seals are hanging out on particular days, and they take visitors to those areas to make sure they see some seals. The walk is mostly level on dirt paths, but with some up and down grades and some rolling dunes. I've seen young kids manage it with no trouble, but it is not wheel-friendly. There are great ocean views as you walk to and from the beaches.
