Joshua Tree - December best area to stay

We will be visiting Joshua Tree in late December and will be in the area for 3 nights. We are looking for recommendations of a suitable city to stay in to use as a base. Would Palm Springs be a good option? Thank you, Bev

Palm Springs is a great option, its about 50 minutes from the town of Joshua Tree. Lots of hotels in PS and the nearby desert resort towns.

However,if you want to be right near the park, the town of Joshua Tree has a few older smaller hotels. The next town east at the north entance to the park is 29 Palms, which has several bigger, newer hotels, as it serves the nearby Marine base.

If you are looking for good restaurants , arts and entertainment, Palm Springs is where you want to be.

This is a list of small, older hotels within walking distance of downtown.

While in the area, here are some things to see from hiking the indian canyons to riding the tram.

Thank you Dez40. We definately want to be close to restuarants so I think Palm Smprings is the right choice. We are in this area 23 - 26 Dec. We do like the idea of smaller boutique hotels so thank you very much for sending through the links. Thanks again, Bev

You might also consider staying further east in the valley in Palm Desert, Indio, La Quinta or Bermuda Dunes - just a bit closer to Joshua Tree.

The further down the valley you go the further you get away from the west or north entrances to the park. You will however get closer to the southern Cottonwood entrance. You are only talking about 10 miles or so difference, so really anywhere you stay in the valley is not terribly far from either entrance to the park. The Joshua Trees are found in the northern part of the park ,which is higher in elevation than the southern end of the park.

Thank you. We have decided on the Palm Desert area, the small amount of extra miles are not an issue to us. Many thanks for all the advice.
