HI there,

Summer is HIGH season here at the beach so prices will be HIGH as well in those locations! I'd say that for 2 in a room prices will start at $200 and go waaay up!The weather should be warm at the coast but not the sticky humid weather you have in NY! We are only 2hrs. from desert so our heat is drier ! Folks who live along the coastal strip don't usually have aircon in their homes!!

Hotels away from the beaches will have lower prices at this time of year.

Depending on how long you'll be here you might like lodging with more space than just a hotel room? The most popular hotel for families is the Homewood Suites Liberty Station but it is not at a beach.

You might consider Capri by the Sea which is a highrise condo facing the ocean which rents out like a hotel.

IF you tell us how long you plan to stay and an idea of your budget in $$s then we may have more ideas for you.

I will second Capri by the Sea. Individually owned condos with an agent who handles them. Every unit has a large window facing the beach. Walking distance to restaurants and shops along the "boardwalk", free assigned underground parking. There is a pool; however it is on an adjacent property.

We stayed there for five days last spring and thoroughly enjoyed it.

The beach is wide and clean (well, you might find some kelp on it after high tide. ) We spent quite a bit of time from our large window watching the surfers and boarders ride the waves. As I said, walking distance to shops and stores and restaurants. Also walking distance to Mission Beach and the Crystal Pier.

IF you go into the ocean then there will always be waves! That is part of what makes an ocean different from being in a pool or a lake.

I DO think that having a car would be a good idea in that location.

It is certainly walking distance to restaurants/shops/beach activities/the cement path along the beachfront where you can bike /rollerskate/walk etc.

To get to other parts of San Diego for sightseeing a car would be helpful!!

But also a good location for public transit, 4 different bus routes go to the Pacific Beach Pier, and a bus goes by every 15 minutes or less most of the day, and is a short trip to the Old Town Transit Center, where you can Transfer to the San Diego Trolley.

Thank you all for the GREAT advice and information.

We are planning to visit Legoland, San Diego Zoo, kids attractions etc...which I'm sure we would need a car for!

How is the traffic driving in San Diego, during high season. I am sure it's like NY where it gets backup?

We did no go out of town, to Legoland, for example, but found no traffic problems in the city itself, and we went to all of the local attractions, including the zoo, Balboa Park, Coronado, Point Loma for the Cabrillo Monument, Seaport Village, etc. a drive up the coast a little.
