Car Hire in LA and Vegas??

Hey,

My girlfriend and I are planning a two week stay in LA/San Diego/Grand Canyon/Vegas around August time. Want to pick up from LA airport and drop off in Las Vegas Airport. Would it be cheaper from Vegas dropping off in LA??

I've done the road trip before and enjoyed it soooo much. Want to hire a SUV to drive through Desert, as I did before. 24 years old so I need to think about under age fee.

Please can you help me with car hire. What companies do I use?? What companies do I avoid? Obviously you have you avis and hertz etc but I hear people hiring from less known companies. Is this risky?

Any advice would be much appreciated.

Cheers

If you can find a lesser known commpany, it shouldn't be too risky, they still have to follow the rules. From my experience, they're often just less convenient and less organized than the big ones. (And I haven't found one yet that allows one way rentals). I use travelocity.com to find my rental cars because they compare most of the companies with one quick try. Hertz and Budget will probably come up cheapest, for one way from my experience.

Most of the lesser known companies will not allow you to drive the car from one state to another. For a side-by-side comparison of car hire rates, go to TRAVELOCITY.COM, click on CARS, click on ONE WAY (at the bottom of the area where you are prompted for information) and then put in your starting and ending points.

Typing in ONE WAY will prompt you to put in 2 different locations -- one in L.A. (for pickup) and one in LV (for dropoff).

Don't forget: In addition to the rate you will be quoted, you need to add insurance coverage (unless the insurance policy on your own vehicle covers vehicles hired in the U.S. Also, sometimes if you use a gold or platinum credit card, the credit card company will cover your insurance.

To find out the cost of the insurance, click on the dollar amount of the car and model you are interested in and then look for links or dropdown menus for the aditional insurance. (Sometimes, they are hard to find). If that is the case, go directly to the car hire companies' website and check their. For example, on Hertz.com and Avis.com, if you identify yourself as living in a country outside of the U.S., the quote will have insurance included. Others will list the insurance as optional but not automatically but not include it (unless you request it).

For a quote which includes insurance ( to give you an idea of the type of insurance needed) go to YESCARHIRE.COM

Good luck!

Hi

Im also 24 and hired a car from dollar - picked it up in san fran and dropped it off in vegas without paying a drop off fee. If you book it through a travel agents who use dollar a lot, then you avoid the fee.

we did pay extra for being under 25..but that's kinda unavoidable

some companies don't charge the under 25 fee. many non-airport locations of Enterprise don't. there are also special codes you can find by using Google for waiving this fee. www.carrentals.com and www.budget.com do factor in insurance cost on the website. You can also call the companies to find out insurance costs to get an idea of what you will actually end up paying per day. Many don't have one-way fees, so look around for that. You can find coupon codes online for waiving those as well.

Highly recommend Airline Network. Picked up in LV and dropped off at Lax, no additional fee. They use Dollar, but are much cheapier than with them direct! Insurance included, don't know what fee is for under 25 though. Have used them every trip to the states and never had any probs.

car rentals are cheaper usually if not rented at airport locations. the difference between airport rental at LAX or Vegas is not much. You don't need a car in Vegas itself - only to drive to the Grand Canyon if you decide to do that yourself and not through a tour.

Discovery Rent A Car not only has cheap rental, but its also only $10 a day for underage fee. I used http://www.carrentalexpress.com to research prices. Kayak.com might be helpful too. I will let you know however that on my last trip to Cali I rented from one of the smaller rental companies and there were a lot of hidden fees....so make sure you find out about all that at first.

Most of the non-airport locations of Enterprise car rental company in LA don't have underage fees at all, and if they do they're either $10 or $15. I would definitely check out all the major companies before going to a no-name one.
