The Orchid Suites and Celebrity Hotel are literally next to one another in Hollywood. They are behind the Hollywood & Highland Center Mall at the very center of the neighborhood. The area is "up late" with loads of pedestrians in and around the mall including adjacent restaurants, movie theaters, bars and clubs.

The Travelodge on Pico is on a busy street in a neighorhood that largely shuts down after sundown. There is nothing there of interest to tourists and no where to walk to. You could certainly drive into city center Santa Monica (10 minutes).

The Orchid Suites has free subterranean parking. The Celebrity and Travelodge have free outdoor parking. Both areas are safe but the Travelodge's neighborhood is a little bit deserted in the evening.

Hollywood and Santa Monica are 30 to 40 minutes apart. Which neighborhood do you want to be in? L.A. is extremely spread out and there are attractions everywhere throughout the region.

Safety should not be a concern as Los Angeles statistically is one of the safest big cities in the world.

You have to understand that travelodge and the orchid or celbrity are in two completly different ares. If you are looking more for a beach vacation, the santa monica option would be probably better(although not that particular hotel)

If you are looking to see all the major Los Angeles sights like Hollywood, Beverly Hills. e.t.c., the orchid or Celebrity would just fit the bill. Plus you would be in a vibrant area that you can walk around at night to multiple bars, restaurants and nightclubs

Totally depends on your itinerary. First, decide what you want to see and do while in Los Angeles. Next, choose an area that will allow you to deal with as little traffic as possible. How many days do you have for your visit, and what do you plan to see and do?

You're considering two completely different areas. Do you want to stay by the beach or in cenrtal LA. December is not beach weather btw if that's a consideration.

You need to decide in which parts of LA you'll spend most of your time. Because you should pick a location that's most convenient to avoid commuting across town too much.

If you want to stay in Santa Monica, I would consider SeaShore Motel on Main St. It's a much better location than Travelodge.

We also need to know your budget. It sounds like it's low, so your options will be limited regardless. With a car, you don't have to stay in Hollywood as it's not necessarily convenient if you're spending most of your time on the west side of LA for example.
