Los Angeles--Off the beaten path

We will be visiting Los Angeles in a couple of weeks and want something different other than the usual. We have lived in L.A. and visit often so all the usual we have done. We have a teenage girl, an 11 year old and a 9 year old. Any suggestions would be helpful--no theme parks, please!

A hike in the Santa Monica mountains, a visit to Topanga, a horseback ride to dinner, a visit to Will Rogers House and watch a polo match, rent bikes and bike to Redondo (or just to Venice), learn to surf, go kayaking, visit one of the dozens of museums here (interested in classic cars? neon lights? dolls? ephemeral art?), a visit to San Gabriel Valley for the best Chinese food in the country (according to Anthony Bourdain), a visit to an authentic Korean Barbeque, visit the San Andreas Fault...

If any of these interest you, I'll post links with information.

The Museum of Jurassic Technology in Venice, The overnight sessions at the San Diego Wild Animal Park.....The new planetarium show at Griffith Park (if you haven't been since it reopened, The Observatory has expanded and is beautiful).

Yoga had some very good ideas. Too add to her list (and hopefully not repeat).

Have you taken them for afternoon tea at the Huntington Library and then spend time exploring the grounds?

A trip to the Getty Museum?

Dodger Gamne?

Dinner and a show at the Hollywood Bowl?

Take a boat out to the Channel Islands and go hiking for the day.

Tell us a little more about what your girls enjoy - indoor or outdoor activities, are they part of any groups like girl scouts, etc? back home?

How about:

Descanso Gardens, an MLS game at the Home Depot center, a trip to Catalina, the California Science Center in Exhibition Park, the zoo, hiking in Griffith Park.

1. Do one of these drives tripadvisor.com/Travel-g32655-c86961/Los-Ang…

2. Cabrillo Marine Museum in San Pedro, if you haven't already been http://www.cabrilloaq.org/

3. On your way back from Cabrillo, stop in at Ports O' Call Village -- esp on a weekend, also in San Pedro, for an amazing cross-cultural experience. Few non-hispanics in LA go there anymore (I'm anglo) but it's amazing because of the crowds and the food. Get the whole barbequed fish (you can find burgers for your kid, too) available all over.

4. While still on east coast time, go to the LA flower market early in the morning http://www.laflowerdistrict.com/ -- be sure to check their hours as they are not always open to the public

Thank you for the great ideas. Those are the type of activities I had in mind. We will go for dim sum though usually downtown L.A. Any good suggestions for dim sum? My oldest loves the arts--we went to the Getty last summer. I was thinking of the Norton Simon but it is alot of traveling--our base is in Santa Monica. We have not done the Hollywood Bowl with them, so that is a great idea.

Thanks all on Trip Advisor--my favorite when planning vacations.

For arts stuff, try LA County Museum Of Art (LACMA) http://www.lacma.org/ which is just a few steps from the La Brea Tar Pits and is also across the street from the Peterson Automotive Museum http://www.petersen.org/. LACMA also includes the relatively new Pavilion for Japanese ARt …wikipedia.org/wiki/Pavilion_for_Japanese_Art
