Please read our FAQs at the top of the LA forums, especially What to Do. Also, buy a book or two on the Los Angeles. Also, research the Family section here at TA.

Depending on where you are staying and how long, consider a day trip out to Channel Islands for hiking and wonderful plants and wildlife viewing - far away from the regular tourist destinations.

Griffith Observatory, Planetarium and great views.

Santa Monica Pier, rides, games, rent bikes and cruise down to Venice Beach.

The Getty Museum, a museum, but wonderful architecture, gardens and views, worth a stop.

Also on the museum side, but interesting for boys that age, Page Museum / La Brea Tar Pits http://www.tarpits.org/, small museum there - but very interesting and near by the

Peterson Automotive Museum: http://www.petersen.org/

As far as amusement parks go - you have Magic Mountain to the north of the city with tons of roller coasters and thrill rides, Disneyland and Cal Adventure in Anaheim, and Knotts Berry Farm not to far from there.

Sign up for surf lessons.

Take a horse back trail ride through the Hollywood Hills.

Go on a Studio Tour.

I would not miss at least a day in Disneyland, you may also want to plan some time for the Laguna Beach area, about 30 minutes from DL. Great beaches, restaurants, etc. Huntington Beach is also nearby and is known as "surf city." This would be a good place for surf lessons if they want to learn.

Enjoy your time with your family! :)

Here would be 5 things that you might enjoy, and the kids.

1. Sporting event- I would take you to a LA Dodgers game. See Baseball in a great stadium. If baseball is not your thing then I would imagine that soccer is, The Major League Soccer season is going on in August, and The LA Galaxy have David Beckham, and Landon Donovan and play just south of LA in the City of Carson. Or if you are into horses, there is the famous Santa Anita Race Track. for future reference to check next seasons schedule here are the links.

2. Amusement park- Disneyland and California adventure are the tops, but there are others in the area, Universal Studios, Knott's Berry Farm, Six Flags Magic Mountain.

3. Hollywood- spend a day in Hollywood, from Grauman's Chinese Theatre to the walk of fame, have lunch at the farmers market(might see some stars shopping), take a tour, go see atv show taping for free.

4. Beaches- the best are in Orange County, Huntington, Balboa, or Newport Beach. try surfing, or boogie boarding. If in LA then Santa Monica or Venice is the best bet. Just don't leave your stuff unattended on any beach.

5. Theatre- Now don’t know if your kids will like at all, but LA has great places to see shows, The Pantages Theatre has wicked, Phantom is coming, and in the past had the Lion King. Other theatres to check are the Kodak theatre, Ivar Theatre, Pasadena Playhouse, and Walt Disney concert hall. Schedules for shows aren’t out, but should be in the new year.

Other opportunities- Queen Mary, Catalina Island, Beverly Hills, Getty Museum.

For boys that age I would pick:

Griffith Observatory

Museum of Natural History (and Museum of Science and Industry nearby)

La brea Tar Pits & Page Museum

Dodger Baseball Game or Laker's Basketball Game

The Warner Brothers' Studio Tour

Not too many Lakers games in August, clubjeff.

Anyway, I have a great suggestion:

Get your kids a private surfing lesson. They'll never forget it.

If they don't know how to swim, take 'em down to Surfrider Beach in Malibu anyway. They'll love the scenery, both in and out of the water. Walk on over to Cross Creek for some Mexican food at Howdy's.

How many days do you have? Things to do in LA are not something that takes 1-2 hrs for the most part. Since the area is very spread out, theme parks take at least a full day and many areas are located an hour drive away, we need more information.

Also, please read the FAQs first and let us know what sounds good out of those already.
