It ain't perfect and it probably doesn't go to a few of the places that are in your plans. But it's a whole lot better than sitting in traffic, behind some nutjob putting on her makeup, and a guy in each lane next to her staring at her wondrous beauty. All three of them are yapping away on their headsets, of course, because ANGELENOS MUST BE TALKING TO SOMEBODY, JUST ANYBODY, AT EVERY WAKING MOMENT OF EVERY DAY. And none of them has ever heard of or had occasion to use a turn signal.

The subway system is very good but not extensive. It runs between Union Station, downtown, Wilshire Blvd., Hollywood, and Universal Studios.

Metro also operates an extensive bus system. The "Rapid" lines in particular are popular limited-stop lines that make travel quicker than with the regular local buses.

If you stay in West Hollywood, you will have to use the bus; the subway does not go there. Check http://www.metro.net for details on bus service to West Hollywood, Santa Monica, and Venice.

Er, ok.

The metro rail system covers only the eastern portion (and some northern areas) of our city. This includes our downtown area which, for some strange reason is not in the center of the city but, instead, in at the eastern edge of it.

Venice, meanwhile is at the western edge of the city and West Hollywood (being, ahem, west of Hollywood -- where the western-most metro rail station is) has no metro rail service either.

For the areas without metro rail service, there is metro BUS service which takes longer than the metro rail, doesn't run as often (except during 'rush hours') and is less punctual. Transferring from West Hollywood to Venice will take about an hour and require transferring between 2 buses.

Look at our FAQs section (a link at the top of the TOPIC LIST) and, especially, the section on "Local Transportation". You will be directed to the website for the metro system (metro.net) where you will find schedules, routes, etc.

In general, the metro rail runs until about midnight (with some exceptions!!) and the buses run all the time but less frequently in the evening.

You might also want to look at Starline Tours' Hop On, Hop Of coach tour which covers a portion of the L.A. metro area and requires no navigating: just jump off at one of the 19 stops and resume the tour later on a subsequent coach. Info at starlinetours.com (look for tours #1H1 and #1H2).

Renting a car is highly recommended for visiting Los Angeles. The attractions are very spread out most are accessible by multiple buses only a few by subway. If renting a car is not possible, then you should stay in Hollywood or downtown Los Angeles. Hollywood (not West Hollywood) is probably best in that there are things to see and do by walking in the area and it is well served by public transit. Downtown Los Angeles is not as desirable area to walk around in, but is even better served by public transit. See www.metro.net for public transit info.

No Metro in West Hollywood, but it does go to Pasadena, Long Beach, and the north

Manhattan Beach on the way to LAX. You'll have to take the bus to Venice.

You can also take the Metrolink to Anaheim.
