LA is enormous. Start with our FAQs at the top of the LA Forums, especially read Where to Stay.

Your budget is low for LA, so Hollywood will probably be where you'll stay since the rates are lower there.

It would be helpful if you provided your travel dates, but for the week of 2 Aug through 9 Aug, Hotwire.com is offering some attractive deals in the greater Hollywood area. Hotwire.com does not disclose the name of the hotel until you provide credit card info, but it's often possible to identify the hotel beforehand. Using a website called Betterbidding.com, here is 1 of the deals being offered with the 'best guess' of the hotel being presented:

A 4-1/2-star hotel in Beverly Hills/West Hollywood for $149. This is MOST PROBABLY, the L.A. Sofitel which is in a neighborhood called Beverly Grove which is just east of Beverly Hills (10 minutes by bus). This is a very central location for greater L.A. especially since you plan to explore in all directions.

Here are reviews for the Sofitel which is ranked #8 out of 286 Los Angeles hotels reviewed here on Trip Advisor:

tripadvisor.com/…CHECK_RATES_CONT

(Link and scroll down for the reviews in the center column. Click on the 'check rates' button for the REGULAR rates for this hotel and you'll see how great a deal hotwire.com is offering).
