Help pick us a hotel near Staples Centre

Hi.. looking for your opinions. 3 girls (20s/30s) coming down to watch the Canucks/Kings game on weds.. going to stay April 20-22.

3 affordable spots we're looking at

The Westin Bonaventure Hotel & Suites, Los Angeles

404 S FIGUEROA ST Los Angeles, CA 90071

Marriott Los Angeles Downtown

333 SOUTH FIGUEROA ST Los Angeles, CA 90071

Miyako Hotel Los Angeles

328 EAST FIRST STREET Los Angeles, CA 90012

any opinions? Is this an ok area to stay in safety wise? Is there any nightlife in the area?

Thanks for your help!

First off, those hotels are all within about a mile of Staples Center, but they're not right next to it. They're towards the northern part of Downtown LA, which is a big place, Staples Center is at the southern end, at about 11th St. There's a newly opened, somewhat more expensive, Marriott right across the street from Staples Center. Not a problem, just so you know.

Of the three, I've only stayed at the Miyako, which is in Little Tokyo. It's a good mid-level hotel, nothing trendy or fancy, but clean, well-staffed, decently decorated. I've gone back there a couple of times. Little Tokyo is one of the livelier parts of Downtown LA at night, with lots of restaurants, not all of them Japanese, some bars etc. Little Tokyo is a few blocks east of where the Bonaventure and the Marriott are, which is in the Financial Districtg area of Downtown LA. That's a tad closer to Staples, but not too lively at night, though you could easily walk from there to more active locations.

The Miyako and the Marriott generally get pretty good reviews on Tripadvisor, it's more mixed for the Bonaventure.

What other attractions will you be visiting during your visit? Downtown L.A. is not in the center of our city; it's near the eastern border of it. If you plan to visit the popular tourist destinations, you'll be doing a lot of driving (if you'll have a car) or riding a lot of buses and/or metro rail.

I'll guess that you won't have a car. If that's the case, you're better off staying in Hollywood -- lots of nightlife in a relatively compact area and an easy transfer to Staples via the red line metro rail. It's also more central to the rest of L.A.

If you want to stay in downtown, consider the Wilshire Grand. 1800hotels.com is offering rooms starting at $110 for your dates. Short walk to the red line station and an easy walk to Staples.

Good luck!

There isn't any reason to stay in Hollywood if you are coming down for a game in Staples. There is plenty to do downtown at night. EG right next to Staples is LA Live which the old timers here forget about.

Of the hotels you've listed the Mariott is slightly closer (by a block) than the Bonaventure. The rooms at the Bonaventure can be small and strange, so check the room layouts.

The Miyako is quite a bit farther (not just a few blocks) and not really walkable at night (whereas the others might be).

There's also Hotel Figueroa which is a notch down in hotel class but inexpensive and close.

Finally you might see what you can get with Hotwire since you can specify the number of guests. For your dates it shows a 31/2 star hotel at $126 for 3 people with an 80% approval rating. That's probably the Kyoto Grand in Little Tokyo (check on betterbidding to verify).

Honestly we dont have any other plans as of yet... I imagine we'll want to go to a bar/club on the tues and after the game weds, maybe do a bit of shopping/wandering during the days. Not too picky on area as long as it's accessible by train or cheapish by cab.

Is the Kyoto Grand easy to get around from?

Any other suggestions for area?

I know you listed those 3 hotels, but how close do you want to be to the Staples Center when you say "near" there?? , or does it matter?? The hotels you listed aren't really within walking distance. Or they could be depending on what you consider "walking distance." Or will you have a car, and it doesn't really matter? The closest one (the Bonaventure) is about 7-8 blocks away. The location where all 3 of those hotels are located are perfectly fine as far as safety.

We won't have a car.. So we're just looking for something cheap decent we can walk/train/cab. I mentioned near staples centre since it's the only thing we've confirmed. Happy to stay somewhere else if it's easy to get to the arena :)

Orbitz has a good deal on the Millenium Biltmore. Including the 3rd person charges. This would be convenient for getting in from the airport as you just hop the Flyaway Express to Union Station downtown and then hop the metro to Pershing Square.

The Biltmore would be the most central. Rooms vary a lot there--if they give you a tiny one or something don't be afraid to ask for a better one.

The Kyoto Grand is about two blocks "closer in" than the Miyako. I disagree with mlgb about their walkability, I've walked to them at night. It is true that there are some blocks on the way through the Civic Center that are fairly deserted, but not dangerous.
