If you want to take a shuttle, www.primetimeshuttle.com or www.supershuttle.com. The cost for 4 of you, however, will likely be comparable to the cost of taking a taxi, which would be in the $50-60 range.

You can also go via public transportation for about half of that cost. Take the FlyAway bus from LAX to Union Station, then the Red Line subway from Union Station towards North Hollywood. Exit at the Hollywood & Highland station, then very short walk to the Renaissance. $7 for the FlyAway bus per person, $1.25 for the Red Line. So total about $34 for 4 people.

The above post shows everything nicely. But the bottom line is that you should take a taxi which are available at LAX without advance reservation. If you have too much baggage for a regular taxi, a larger vehicle should be available. The above mentioned van shuttles are also available, but I would only consider them if your baggage was too much for a taxi and a larger taxi couldn't be found.

There is no shuttle, per se. There are "shared van" services where you share a van which stops at the specific hotels of the riders of that van. With 4 persons, it's less expensive to take a taxi than use a shared van and it's much quicker since the taxi goes directly to your hotel whereas the 'shared van' waits to pickup other passengers and may detour to drop off others on the way to your hotel.

Without traffic, the taxi will take 30 to 40 minutes; the 'shared van' will take 75 to 90 minutes. There is a public transit option involving an airport bus into downtown L.A. followed by a metro rail ride. This is the most inexpensive option ($33 for the 4 of you versus $60 for the 'shared van' and $50-$55 for the taxi).

But, the public transit option will also take 75 to 90 minutes as it does not follow a straight line and there is a waiting time associated with the bus and metro rail trains. In addition, you'll need to carry your luggage on and off these conveyances and in between the bus stop and the metro rail station. Lastly, the metro rail trains do not provide luggage storage or guarantee you a seat so it is possible that you will be standing for this transfer with your luggage at your feet.

Most people who've flown 10 hours followed by wading through baggage claim, customs and immigration would rather pay a little bit more and take a taxi or a 'shared van'. It's up to you.

Since there are 4 of you, tell the dispatcher at the taxi queue that you need a "van size" taxi. Alternatively, if you have an extraordinary amount of luggage, you might take a "private van" from one of the 'shared van' companies. These are large enough to hold 7 to 9 persons (as well as their luggage) and, at $77, cost just a little bit more than a taxi (the regular and 'van sized' taxis cost the same).

Info about 'shared vans' and 'private vans' is at redvans.com or primetimeshuttle.com.

A detailed description of all of these transfer options can be found in our LOS ANGELES FAQs section -- a link at the top of the TOPIC LIST.

Good luck!

I can certainly see why folks might want to take a van or taxi. Transit might take as long as 75-90 minutes. The best case scenario is that you catch a Flyaway right away and traffic is light, so you get downtown in about 30 minutes. It takes about 5 minutes to walk within Union Station to the subway stop. You catch a train right away to Hollywood, a 20 minute ride. That would be 55 minutes. This would be the dream trip obviously, so I'd say that going by transit would take somewhere in the 60-90 minute range.

Looks like we are more confortable with a taxi even considering the travel time. We travel light, two bags and perhaps a trolley.

On the way back we have a flight at 10.25 am on a monday morning. Shall we consider say 2 hours travel time instead of 90min?

Thanks all for your tips!
