Best affordable map of LA & San Fran for purchase?

Will be flying into LA in August and wondering which map locals would recommend for LA? We will be staying with relatives in Woodland Hills area and visiting downtown LA, Santa Monica, areas and heading out for a week up the 101 to SF returning back to LA a few days before heading home. Are there any decent maps that might include both LA and SF in some detail? We will likely hit a bookstore our first day in town so something widely available and recommended would be great. Suggestions? Thanks in advance.

p.s. rough idea on cost?

Ask your relatives if they are members of AAA and ask them to pick up an LA and SF map for free for you. May be all the detail you really need.

If not, the best detailed maps are from Thomas Guide. Very detailed and updated every year. It looks like they are available through Amazon for about $20 each. You should be able to pick one up at any large book store--or, if those relatives are members of Costco, they should be able to pick one up there--at least the LA one. This may be more detail than you need to get from Woodland Hills to the main tourist spots.

There probably isn't one map that gives you both LA and SF with enough detail. You probably want to just park in SF and take public transporation. Or--stay in the suburbs and take the BART into the city.

Thanks... Will have to do the AAA thing (we are members of CAA), forgot about that. I like the idea of the Thomas Guide - will leave it with relatives once we leave--who can't use a good map eh? We are definitely parking once in SF, not interested in driving there at all. Thanks again.
