That is the area that's the hub of tourism in LA. Transportation is easy, lots of restaurants nearby, lots of activity in the area (it's like Picadilly Circus in London).

Read the FAQs on Transportation for info on how to get around. But, to SM, it's about $50 cab fare each way. Yes, Universal is an easy metro ride and very close by.

With 5 of you traveling, you might take a taxi to Universal. It will cost about $14 compared to 5 metro rail or bus tickets @ $1.50 each = $7.50 Taking public transit will involve 3 steps:

1. Walking to the start of your transit route.

2. Transferring to the Universal City area

3. Walking to, waiting for and riding the free tram 'up the hill' to the Park.

There are two methods of transferring -- by metro rail or by bus. Here are the step-by-step directions:

BY BUS TO UNIVERSAL:

a. Walk to the northeast corner of Highland Av & Franklin Av. This is a little tricky since Franklin intersects Highland Av in 2 places; walking from your hotel, you'll come upon Highland Av. That's the first place where the streets intersect. Cross to the far side of Highland, turn left and walk to the next corner. That's the second place where the streets meet. Here's a map:

A=Hotel

B=1st intersection of the 2 streets

C=2nd Intersection of the 2 streets

http://mapq.st/kHnqZs

You want point "B" The walk is about 1/3 mile / .53 km and should take about 8 minutes. The buses run about once per hour and the ride is about 11 minutes to the corner of Ventura Bl & Lankershim Bl. Look up precise schedules using the TRIP PLANNER at the right side of the home page at METRO. NET. Use 7025 Franklin (your hotel's address) as the starting point and Universal Studios as your ending point.

From the bus stop, walk back to Lankershim Bl (30 seconds) turn left onto it and pass under the bridge. You'll see a large sign for Universal ahead on the right. Cross Lankershim to reach it. The sign is in the middle of the entrance road to Universal. Turn right onto the sidewalk before reaching the sign and walk 50 m to the tram stop and wait for the free tram 'up the hill' to the Park. The trams runs about once every 15 minutes and the ride takes a minute. So, let's recap;

1. Walk to bus stop -- 8 minutes.

2. Wait for bus -- 5 minutes (come early, just in case).

3. Ride the bus -- 11 minutes

4. Walk to the tram stop -- 4 minutes

5. Wait for the tram -- 7 minutes (average wait time)

6. Ride the tram to the top of the hill -- 1 minute.

Total transfer time: 36 minutes at a total cost of $7.50 for the lot of you.

BY METRO RAIL TO UNIVERSAL:

a. Walk to the metro rail station just to the west of the northwest corner of Highland Av & Hollywood Bl. Here's a map:

A=Hotel

B=Metro Station @ Hollywood/Highland

http://mapq.st/krJNcP

The walk is about .38 miles / .61 km and should take about 9 minutes. The trains run once every 12 minutes and the ride is 5 minutes to the Universal City Red Line station. Look up precise schedules using the TRIP PLANNER at the right side of the home page at METRO. NET. Use 7025 Franklin (your hotel's address) as the starting point and Universal Studios as your ending point.

From the entrance to the Hollywood/Highland station, take the massive escalator down one level to the vending machines. Buy your outbound ticket ($1.50) there, or if you think you'll be using 5 or more metro rail trains or metro buses in one day, buy a DAY PASS from the machines. (More on DAY PASSES in our FAQs section under "Local Transportation").

Descend one more level to the metro rail platform and be sure to take the next NORTHBOUND train (marked "North Hollywood"). Get off at the next stop, Universal City and ascend 2 levels to the street. When you emerge from the station, Lankershim Bl will be crossing your path behind you -- turn around when you reach the top of the second escalator. The main entrance road to Universal begins on the other side of Lankershim Bl. Walk to the cross walk and cross to the diagonally-opposing corner and then walk 50 m to the tram stop. Follow the directions above for the tram. So, let's recap:

1. Walk to the Metro station -- 9 minutes

2. Descend to the first level, buy your ticket from the vending machines (there could be a wait) and descend to the next level where the platform is -- 5 minutes

3. Wait for the next train (average wait time: 6 minutes). Ride the train (5 minutes). So, that's 11 more minutes.

4. Ascend 2 levels and walk to the tram stop -- 4 minutes

5. Wait for the tram -- 7 minutes (average wait time)

6. Ride the tram to the top of the hill -- 1 minute.

Total transfer time: 37 minutes at a total cost of $7.50 for the lot of you.

TRANSFERRING BY TAXI:

Simply get into a taxi at your hotel (ask at reception for assistance) and you are dropped off at the main gates to the Park (actually at the bottom of a staircase to the main gates). Ask to be taken to the Park entrance at the west end of the Park as that is the closest to the entrance gates.

Here's a map of the route: http://mapq.st/lyFeLr

Here's a closeup of the end point: http://mapq.st/lvlIjf

(Note: this mapping system cannot mark locations that are on private property. The actual entrance to Universal is to the east of point "B" on the map, at the end of the white road, where the words "Universal Studios Hollywood" are). Your taxi driver will know this location. Just be sure that the driver doesn't drop you at the eastern end of the Park, at the top of the white looped road above the words "Hank Williams Drive". This location is at the eastern end of Universal City Walk (the skinny, wavy brown line between the eastern and western Park entrances). If you get dropped at the eastern end, you'll need to walk through the City Walk (an outdoor shopping and dining complex) to the main entrance to the Park.

The taxi ride will take 10 minutes or less and the fare will be about $12 (plus 15% tip of $2) = $14. The taxi will take 1/3rd the time and cost only $6.50 more than public transit. BTW, when ordering the taxi, be sure to indicate that there are 5 of you so that a large enough taxi is dispatched to you.

There's no direct bus service from the central Hollywood area where you're staying to Santa Monica. You have two options: 1. Walk down about a mile to Santa Monica Blvd. and catch the 704 bus to Santa Monica; or 2. Catch a 217 or 780 bus at Hollywood & Highland, then transfer to a westbound bus--either the 704 or the more frequent and faster 720 at Fairfax & Wilshire. The Trip Planner on Metro's website--www.metro.net--will give you a specific routing for any particular time you want to go.
