Most practical place to be based?

Hi

We are a family of 4 (kids aged 7 & 11) and will be looking to visit Venice Beach, Santa Monica and Universal Studios as well as heading out to watch a game at Dodger Stadium. As we are planning on using public transport where would be the best place to stay to give relatively easy access to the areas we want to visit?

Appreciate any assistance.

The most central location, and an area which is well-served by transit, is Hollywood. From Hollywood you can take the Red Line subway and then a shuttle to Dodgers Stadium. Universal Studios is one stop away from Hollywood/Highland station on the Red Line, then a short tram ride or walk up the hill. Santa Monica will take longer--you can do it on a single bus if you're good walkers, or make any easy transfer. Once you're in Santa Monica you can walk or take a bus to Venice.

Your questions is asked often on the Forum. Our metro area is extremely spread out so there is no single location that is ideal for visiting the sites you've mentioned. Hollywood is the best option for you.

Take a look at our TOP QUESTIONS section at the top right corner of this page and familiarize yourself with the public transit system. There are discount passes that you should purchase and online systems for looking up transit routes.

Agree with the recs for Hollywood. The best spot for transit access is to be near the intersection of Hollywood Blvd. and Highland Ave. Hotels in that area span a range of prices. In rough order from most to least expensive:

Renaissance Hollywood Hotel

Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel

Magic Castle hotel

Holiday Inn Express Walk of Fame

Hollywood Heights Hotel

Orchid Suites

Hollywood Celebrity Hotel

the Motel 6 on Whitley Ave.

Thanks to all 3 who have replied so quickly. That's great information. Sorry for asking a common question but it is often hard to gauge distances on a map when you haven't been to a particular city. I understand that LA is a big city and it's good to have local knowledge about relative distances and the public transportation system.

Thanks again.

Without a car, it's best to be based in Hollywood. What's your budget per night?

We stayed at the Holiday Inn Express on Highland, mentioned above.

It is a great hotel. It's not very old, has large rooms with two queen beds, flatscreen TV, smallish pool, guest laundry and free hot buffet breakfast.

The location is excellent.

The walk to the corner of Highland and Hollywood Blvd is about 5-10 minutes, depending who is slowest.

As well as the metro station to Universal on the corner, there is the Kodak Theatre, the names of stars on the sidewalks, Graumans Chinese Theatre, which is handy as tours leave from here .. you could do tours of stars homes, beverly hills and santa monica etc. Have a look at Starline Tours website to see what is available.

There is also plenty of shops and cafes. The HIE doesn't have a restaurant, but there are so many nearby it doesn't matter.

Venice Beach is not geared toward children. Unless your kids are interested in bong shops and cheap tee shirts, there are far better beaches for families. I would suggest going to Santa Monica and renting bicycles. Then, you can get to Venice, take a quick look, and if it's not for you, be on your way.
