Hollywood Greyhound Bus Statiion is closed

I drove by it today and there's a fence around the building, the sign is down and there is a 'for lease' sign in front. From now on, visitors to L.A. wishing to arrive by Greyhound will have to arrive:

1. At the downtown L.A. station (1716 E 7TH ST

Los Angeles, CA 90021) or

2. At L.A..Amtrak/Union (rail) station in downtown (only some Greyhound buses stop here).

3. At the North Hollywood Station (11239 MAGNOLIA BLVD

North Hollywood, CA 91601) in the northern suburb above Hollywood. (only some buses stop here).

Thanks for the update, HSJ.

A lot of folks don't realize that Greyhound Bus Lines is actually a for profit company, and is not some kind of a government agency. So when business is down, they have to close. I've seen Greyhound discontinue service to Lancaster further north of Hollywood in the Antelope Valley where I live (Palmdale still has service, as does the town of Mojave further north).

Competition with governmental special districts that recieve tax monies, such as Metro in LA or Metrolink in Southern California is difficult for a for profit company to deal with, even one as well established as Greyhound. So I'm not totally surprised at this news. Hopefully when the economy gets better Greyhound will reopen and be back in business in Hollywood.

In the meantime, some ways for tourists to get to Hollywood would include getting to LA Union Station via Amtrak, Greyhound (when it stops there as you well noted) and the Flyaway service from Los Angeles International Airport/LAX. Metrolink too, for those who know about this passenger rail service which travels throughout Southern California. From there, one may take the LA Metro Red Line subway from Union Station or a Metro transit bus if that's what's desired. There's still transit available to and from Hollywood despite the closure of the Greyhound depot in Hollywood.

That's a shame about Hollywood station. It's not too bad as long as North Hollywood continues to function and Greyhound passengers can transfer to the Red Line there.

Greyhound's a private company, but it's gotten a lot of breaks from public entities. Unlike, say, Metro, Greyhound has had years and years to comply with the mandate of the Americans with Disabilities Act to make all of it vehicles disabled accessible.

It's not so much a matter of subsidized competition in a field where public entities don't make money, but off Greyhound off loading less busy routes to public agencies. Over the years Greyhound has served fewer and fewer small towns, forcing underfunded transit agencies to try to provide the service.
