Is Getty Museum a good place for 4 year old toddlers

I remember going to the Getty years ago and the great outdoor garden and views. Would it be appropriate to take the kids for a few hours to enjoy?

Yes they'd have fun in the outside gardens at the Getty Center Museum. But be aware that the central garden will be closed from February 14, through May 27, 2012.

The grounds at the Getty Museum are nice. There is also a Getty in Malibu. I would probably go to the Getty Museum and not Malibu. As you know some of the areas are art galleries. And you cannot touch everything. So it depends in part how rambuctious your 4 year olds are - you know them best. The outdoor area is fine for the kids - but you will need to decide how much of the art galleries you want to take them too. If you just want to get out and enjoy the area - it should be ok for the 4 year olds. I would probably keep an eye on their extension spans for the day and adjust how short or long you end up being there.

I think mini means the children's "attention" spans, not their "extension spans".

Appropriate? With all due respect, you've been to the museum and you know your kids. Do you think it would be appropriate?

Would the visit to the Getty be part of the 'Suggested driving tour of L.A. for 1 day' in your other thread? Going to the Getty will take some time (even if you don't stay that long) since it's not near other attractions and requires waiting for and riding the inclined railroad between the parking lot and the museum (at the top of the hill). You can't see much of L.A. in a 1-day 'drive by' and less if you're going to go to the Getty.

What types of things would you like to see and do during your visit to Los Angeles and vicinity? We have 100s of attractions -- from beaches with bike paths to one of the biggest urban parks in the U.S. (Griffith Park). Do you REALLY want to go to the Getty?

They do have some family events there, but the current ones listed on the web site are suggested for children 5 and up. That said, kids will for sure love the tram ride up to the museum, and should enjoy the fountains and gardens (if they're open when you go). There's also a "family room" geared for kids.

Unless you really want to go to the Getty, toddlers and art museums don't really go together. There are many better choices with little kids.

Museums with gardens are fine with toddlers. Both the Getty Center Museum and the Getty Villa (also Huntington Library) would be great with toddlers who can run around outside.

simple answer:

no

complex, politically correct answer- There are myriad things more suitable for 4 year olds in the greater LA area. Many places that will have a lot of 4 year olds there, than an art museum. The Getty can get crowded at some of the best exhibits. Its possible to trample a small person, or trip over a stroller, or be distracted by a crying child. The dining choices are not "kid-friendly". If an adult is bringing a four year old to an art museum, I really have to wonder about their thought and logic processes. A four year olds attention span is about five minutes- can anyone remember when they were four, and if they were towed to an art museum for three hours, while Mom and Dad enjoyed a bunch of crazy pictures on a wall. Sure- parents can say they are trying to "enculture" their child. Well, OK....try and back that up with some scientific evidence from Piaget or Erikson about a 4 year olds cognitive ability.

end of politically correct answer.
