MOCA and Geffen Contemporary museums

I am about to be a first time visitor to LA. I researched the MOCA and Geffen museums and found two different addresses. Yet, I feel that they are in the same area. Are they connected? Are they within walking distance of each other? Can both be done in one day?

Yes, there is one on Bunker Hill on Grand Avenue in the Financial District and another down the hill in Little Tokyo adjacent to the Japanese-American Museum. They are within walking distance, although I'd dare say the outer limits of it. From Little Tokyo walk west/up First Street. At Grand, hang a left and head west a block or so. Getting up the hill via First Street could be a bit much for many. If you park at one, then you have to walk back. Maybe a cab for one portion would be a sensible idea. In Little Tokyo, you can get a cab at the Miyako Hotel on First which is about half a block from the JAM. From the sight on Grand, you can get a cab at the Omni Hotel, although you'd have to walk through the hotel and down to the lobby on Olive.

If you like that sort of thing, there are many very architecturally significant buildings along First Street -- Caltrans Building, City Hall, LAPD HQ, Disney Hall, Music Center. There's a nifty observation deck on the 28th floor of City Hall which is open to the public. I'd also sneak over to the Cathedral which is a block over on Temple between Grand and Hill. The public plaza is very welcoming. Check out the park on the roof of Disney Hall, too. On weekends, parking is cheap here at the Cathedral.

Yes, you could check out both museums in a single day. MOCA up on Grand is a medium sized place. The Geffen in Little Tokyo specializes in massive installations.

You can take the DASH buses around downtown LA. You'll see a lot and it is fun. They travel a loop, very cheap too.

MOCA is across the street from Disney Hall, which you will want to see.

LIttle Tokyo is a fun area, good places to eat: some Japanese, some (Laxy Ox Canteen, Spice Table) not.

If you are in decent shape, that hill is no problem.
