Help me plan my visit to LA

I am planning to visit LA and Vegas at the beginning of October. I have been to Vegas before so know the places to see and things to do. I need some info on LA. I want to see all the main touristy sites and also be able to visit the beach. i will be using public transport. My question is where is the best place to stay in LA to see the sites. I plan to stay about 5 days then go to Vegas.

Before selecting a place, answer three questions.

1) What is your budget? Understand, LA ain't Vegas, which gives away hotel rooms.

2) Will you rent a car?

3) What is your itinerary?

Once you know these, you can start narrowing down you hotel selection. I sense you need to do some research to determine your itinerary. Moreover, there is some central location convenient to all the sights. The city is very large and complex and most interesting. LA rewards planning.

Take a look at the FAQs to start work on your itinerary.

For things to do, please check the green bar at the top of this screen and click on the tab Things to Do. If you stay in Hollywood, much of the touristy places are right there (like walk of fame, Hollywood sign, Chinese Theater) so it's easy to see them at any time. It's also the easiest place to stay if you need mass transit. Be prepared to pay around $150 per night for hotel; you could get a bargain as October is not high season, but keep the $150 figure in mind just in case.

For the beach, Santa Monica makes the most sense as it's most proximate to LA and has the most things to do at and around the beach. It's an easy walk to Venice Beach or you can rent a bike and ride the wonderful beach bike path.

I see you've put this on twice onto the California forum.

I have never stayed in LA without a car .. it is so much easier to get around rather than wait for buses and trains etc.

But if you don't want to do that, stay in the Hollywood area and do some tours ... there is a metro station on the corner of Hollywood Blvd and Highland Avenue which is one stop from Universal Studios, plus you can get it to downtown which can connect. And there are buses.

Some hotels popular with Aussies include the Magic Castle, the Orchid Suites, Hollywood Celebrity and the Holiday Inn Express Walk of Fame.

All within walking distance to what Hollywood has to offer, including the stars names in the sidewalk, Madam Taussauds, Dolby Theatre where the Oscars are held, and you can take tours of the theatre, the Hollywood Highland Center and Graumans Chinese Theatre. From the chinese theatre, Starline Tours leave from, so you have heaps of choices with them for tours. The beaches in LA are OK .. but we have better ones here. Here are some websites for you.

If you fly to Las Vegas, have a look at Southwest Airlines from Burbank Airport .. which is closer to Hollywood for you.

Thanks for this. It's really helpful. I will take a look at links but I think I am swaying towards staying in Hollywood.

Your post is so helpful. Hollywood seems to be the best place to stay to get around without a car. I am a bit nervous driving over there and it would just spoil my hols thinking about. Thank you for all the info.

Hollywood (Hollywood Blvd. and Highland Ave.) is indeed the best place to stay without a car, and hotels in that area span a range of prices from low to high, so there's something there for most every budget. Public transportation there to most tourist areas is good, requiring only 1-2 subway/bus rides, plus LA's largest tour provider (www.starlinetours.com) stages their tours from the Chinese Theater at this intersection.
