Though the show isn't shot on location, characters frequently mention popular Orange County hangouts like South Coast Plaza and Fashion Island. The Harbor School is a fictional private school which may have been inspired by the Sage Hill School, an elite private school in the hills of Newport Coast. There exists a Newport Harbor High School, but it is a public school. Furthermore, many of the other schools mentioned on the show, such as Mater Dei High School and UCI, are all actually there. Newport Union High School, however, does not exist. Additionally, the TV show's Balboa Wetlands appear to be based upon real-life Orange County's Bolsa Chica Wetlands.

You are in luck, most of "The OC" isn't filmed in Orange County, which is about 70 miles South of Hollywood. If you want to take her to see what they experience on the show, take her to Mount St. Mary's college in Brentwood (about 15 miles from HW), which is "Harbor High" per the TV Show. She'll be able to tell right away that this is where it's filmed. Warning, Mount Saint Mary's is very hard to find. Make sure you get excellent directions.

The arial shots of Newport Beach are actually in Palos Verdes (25 miles or so from where you are) and I believe that the Pier they spean a great deal of time using is in Manhattan Beach (20 miles). Manhattan Beach is actually one of the best beaches around, clean, safe etc. So, you can experience a great beach and show her some of the sights of The OC. Hope this helps!

To keep production costs down - that's why they shoot where they shoot.

Yup Yogachik is right. The OC is filmed in closer to LA to keep costs down. If they shoot too far from the stufio the production company must pay mileage from the studio to the location even if the cast and crew never actually drove to the studio and then to the location.

The OC's stages are at Manhattan Beach Studios in appropriately enough Manhattan Beach. Typically productions want to stay close to their stages just like the other 2 people said about keeping costs down. Since this is a TV show with 22 episodes they have a set budget for the entire season and can only spend so much per episode.

Films on the other hand have $20-$100+ million dollar budgets and can pretty go wherever they want. It's nice when they shoot in LA so actors don't have very far to drive.

When productions go "outside" of a 30 mile "Studio Zone" radius from Hollywood they have to pay their union crews extra costs for mileage penalties. A majority of crews live in Los Angeles and the San Fernando Valley so after working a 12-16 hour day it's nice to have a short drive home.

Hope that made sense.

By the way when film/TV companies do come to shoot at or near the beach parking is VERY limited for all the trucks they bring along plus they drastically affect local businesses due to temporary closures from filming. In high society Newport Beach that might rub people's noses the wrong way.

the overhead pier shot of the trianguilar pier is Redondo, the glass church with the wedding and funereals is the wayfarers chapel in palos verdes and would make a nice side trip. The ferris wheel from season 1 is at balboa fun zone newport beach.

Like all of Southern California, some areas are affluent, some are not.
