Driving from LA to Palm springs in the evening time

HI all

plan to get to Palm Springs (will be looking for accommodation near to the Desert Hills outlets) right after visiting the Natural history museum which closes at 5pm on a Wednesday in December.

would like to know if that is considered a peak time for driving out of LA to Palm Springs. trying to avoid getting stuck in the traffic for hours....

what are the timings that i should avoid ?

tks

OK, the best known Hotel near the Desert Hills Outlet Mall in Cabazon is the Morongo Casino/Resort. There are cheaper options a few miles away.

As for when to leave, the drive is pretty much I-10 East if the traffic isn't bad. I would start around 6:30 to 7 PM, and stop at the junction of the I-10 and I-15 and check out the Ontario Mills Oultet Mall. Just make sure to not enter then Express Lane, as you need a special transponder to use it.

On what date in December? Chances are the week of Christmas and New Years will see substantially lighter traffic than normal which should help, depending on what day this is.

Just to be clear, the outlet mall is not in Palm Springs. It is in the town of Cabazon which comes before you reach the turn off to Palm Springs.

When my husband joins us after work hours, on a weekday night he waits until 7 PM to leave LA, and drive to Palm Springs. I'd have dinner when the museum closes and then head out to the Morongo Casino Resort in Cabazon, next to the outlets. Or leave LA by 3 PM.

Riff is right, Cabazon is about a half hour before the hotels in PS if that was your next stop.

I used to drive out that way after work from downtown. Unless things have substantially improved, you will want as suggested to wait until after 7 pm. On Thursdays and Fridays it is even worse.

Two to three hours time frame is what you are looking at.

HI all

thanks so much for the replies..

okay, will leave after dinner at LA....no fun to be stuck in the jam with an empty stomach and grouchy kids!

thks Darkbeer, for the suggestion to visit Ontario Mills...sure hope we still have the energy to do that after visiting the Natural History Museum:) but i am curious about this transponder device u mentioned.... how does it work? and will this be installed in rental cars? it sounds like a toll which we have to pay electronically in order to use the express lane? what happens if we accidentally drive into the express lane and we do not have the transponder? sorry for so many questions but i am worried that we might break the law unknowingly...

Do not even THINK about dealing with transponders and express lanes.

Just go to the Desert Hills Premium Outlets and the Cabazon Outlets, you can shop until you drop. There is no need to head to Ontario for anything.

I agree ignore the Ontario Mills suggestion. Especially around the holidays.
